Since Sunday, several new wildland fires have been detected in southeastern Montana.
The largest is the 1,230-acre Shirley fire burning in Powder River County east of Otter. The blaze grew after the Stewart fire, to the south, joined with the Shirley fire. Both were lightning caused and are burning on the the Ashland Ranger District of the Custer Gallatin National Forest.
The Shirley fire is the largest burning in southeastern Montana.
Five engines, a dozer, a type 2 initial attack crew and air attack have been dedicated to the fire.
The lightning caused Daily fire is burning in grass, timber and pine understory 9 miles northeast of Ashland. Three engines, nine smokejumpers and one type 2 initial attack crew are fighting the 160-acre fire.
The fire ignited on Aug. 5 near the confluence of Daily and Prairie Dog creeks on the northeast side of the Ashland District.

The 32-acre Three Mile fire is burning in the 3 Mile Buttes area on the eastern boundary of the district, about 18 miles southeast of Ashland,.
Dugan Draw fire ignited on the Sioux Ranger District. The 1.5-acre blaze is burning south of Ekalaka and west of Camp Needmore on the northwest corner of the district.
The 5.5-acre Houghlan fire is located 16 miles east of Ashland. An engine has been assigned and a dozer line was built around the fire but smoke is visible from the nearby road.
The 10-acre Willard fire is located in the Slim Buttes in Harding County, 22 miles southeast of Buffalo, South Dakota.
As of Tuesday, Aug. 6, 67 fires were burning in Montana, according to the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation.
