Iowa coach Tom Brands opens up on Spencer Lee’s upcoming Olympic run, his message to Lee ahead of trip to France
Can Team USA add another gold?
That will come down to Sarah Hildebrandt, the United States’ women’s freestyle representative at 50 kilograms. She won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics but has already surpassed that effort with her three-win effort on Tuesday.
Alongside her looking for some hardware was Dominique Parrish (53 kilograms, women’s freestyle), Payton Jacobson (87 kilograms, Greco-Roman) and Josef Rau going for bronze (97 kilograms, Greco-Roman). However, Jacobson and Rau have been eliminated following the morning session.

You gotta hand it to Jacobson, he was aggressive from the first whistle, but it cost him as Komarov posted seven quick points including a four-point throw off to kick things off. The four-time age-group world champion was dominant, ending the match just over a minute for the 10-0 technical fall.
Jacobson will need Komarov to reach the gold medal final to remain alive
Team USA’s Dominique Parrish pinned by Japan’s Akari Fujinami
Parrish had a tough draw in the first round, facing the 21-year old two-time world champion. With Japan struggling in the first two days of action and the United States thriving, tey desperately needed a win here.
Fujinami wasted little time, securing a fall in the first period by securing a single-leg grapple and carrying Parrish up and over her head and onto her back.
Parrish should have a good chance to reach the repechage, as Fulinami is one of the classes’ favorites. Still, this is Tam USA’s first loss in women’s freestyle and it comes against the worst possible opponent as they look to secure team bragging rights. However, they’re still 7-1 in this tournament, so its hard to ask for much more than that.

After losing in the first round to Mohammad Hadi Saravi of Iran, Rau had one more chance at bronze after Saravi reached the final. However, Kyrgyzstan’s Uzur Dzhuzupbekov had the upper-hand here as a former Olympian in the 2020 cycle and defeated Rau by a 5-3 score. Rau scored four points in the final period to nearly make comeback as he trailed 5-4 with 10 seconds to go, but conceding five in the opening frame was too much to overcome as Dzhuzupbekov scored a four-point throw in the final moments to advance.
In total, Team USA’s is now 0-4 in Greco-Roman, compared to 7-0 for Team USA and their women’s freestyle team.
Team USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt draws new opponent for gold medal match, India’s Vinesh Phogot misses weight
Wednesday morning saw a brutal blow for India’s Vinesh Phogat a three-time Olympian who made waves by defeating Japan superstar Yui Susaki in the first round yesterday and reaching the gold medal bout. According to United World Wrestling, Phogat did not make the 50-kilogram weight. She has been replaced by Yusneylis Guzman Lopez of Cuba, who lost to Phogat in the semifinals.
For Hildbrandt, this is a better draw, as she thrashed the Cuban for a 10-0 technical fall at the Pan-American Championships in 2023 and looks to be on the path to gold.
Who is Dominique Parrish?
A Scotts Valley, California native, Parrish is in her first-ever Olympic games as Team USA’s representative at 53 kilograms. A 2022 senior world champion, Parrish has reached the top of the world stage before, but not on the Olympic stage at 27-years of age.
Parrish is unseeded at the Olympics and has drawn Japan’s Akari Fujinami in the first round, a two-time world champion in 2021 and 2023. As Team USA looks to upend the dynasty that is the Japanese women’s freestyle team, that match is a crucial one. Her next match would be the winner of Christianah Ogunsanya of Nigeria or Khulan Batkhuyag of Mongolia. Batkhuyag was a 2022 silver world medalist. Her semifinal matchup could include Olympic silver medalist Quiyanu Pang of China.
Who is Payton Jacobson?
An Elkhorn, Wisconsin native, Jacobson is making his first Olympic appearance as well at 21-years old. A senior at Northern Michigan University, Jacobson overcame Perthes disease to make the Olympic team, a hip condition that limits blood supply to the head of the femur bone.
Jacobson is also unseeded and will face No. 7 Aleksander Komarov of Serbia. He’s a five-time age-group world champion. Awaiting him in the quarterfinals would be the winner of Hungary’s David Losonczi or Azerbaijan’s Rafig Huseynov. Between the two, they have three world championships.
It’s going to be a tough start for Jacobson, but a couple of wins early would change the narrative fast.
Who is Sarah Hildebrandt?
An Olympic bronze medalist in 2020, Hildebrandt is looking for more in 2023 in the 50-kilogram weight class.
The Granger, Indiana native is the No. 6 seed in the field and as accomplished as anyone. She is a four-time Senior World medalist and has won two silver and two bronze medals. At 31-years old, she won a pair of collegiate wrestling titles for King University in 2014 and 2015.
She won three matches on Tuesday to reach the gold medal final, outscoring her opponents 22-4 so far.
Who is Josef Rau?
Rau is competing in his first Olympics at 33 years old in the 97-kilogram weight class. The Elmhurst College graduate was a three-time NCAA Division III All-American and won a national title in 2013. He’s competed for Team USA in four Senior World Championships but has never medaled.
Rau will face Kyrgyzstan’s Uzur Dzhuzupbekov, who was an Olympian in the 2020 cycle.
