The Diamondbacks placed catcher Gabriel Moreno on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday with a strained left adductor, the latest crushing injury the club will be forced to find a way to overcome.
The severity of the injury is not yet known. General Manager Mike Hazen said Moreno returned to Arizona on Tuesday and will undergo an MRI exam on Wednesday.
Taking Moreno’s place on the roster is catcher Adrian Del Castillo, whose first game with the Diamondbacks will mark his major league debut.
Moreno suffered the injury legging out an infield single in the second inning of the Diamondbacks’ 7-6 win over the Guardians on Monday at Progressive Field in Cleveland. He appeared to feel discomfort a little more than halfway to first, hobbled the last couple steps, and then collapsed in pain after crossing the bag.

Moreno’s injury is certain to be felt. A Gold Glove winner last year, he is regarded as one of the better defensive catchers in baseball, and he was hitting a solid .262/.344/.385 with five homers. His bat had been heating up over the past month or so; he was hitting .333 with an .889 OPS over his past 25 games.
Del Castillo, 24, a second-round pick out of Miami in 2021, has been one of the best hitters in the minor leagues this season. In 100 games with Triple-A Reno, Del Castillo hit .319/.403/.608 with 63 extra-base hits, including 24 homers. He has a healthy walk rate (11.5 percent) and a low strikeout rate (16.8 percent).
“We’ve felt like for a while he was getting ready to come up here and get this opportunity,” Hazen said. “He’s had a fantastic year. All the reports out of Triple-A are that the defense is continuing to improve all the way around. At that position, it’s a slow developmental process, usually. He’s going to have his ups and downs here, too, but he’s done a really good job out of all the things everyone values out of that position there, and he’s raked.
“I don’t think we’re looking for an offensive contribution. We’re looking for defense first and then give us good at-bats. We just felt like it was his time to come up here and play.”
Hazen deferred to manager Torey Lovullo on how playing time would be handled but he said he imagined Moreno’s backup, Jose Herrera, probably would get — at least initially — the bulk of the starts. Herrera is familiar with the pitching staff and has been putting together fairly competitive at-bats.
Moreno is the second position player to suffer a significant injury in the past week after first baseman Christian Walker went down with a left oblique strain during the previous homestand.
Earlier in the year, the Diamondbacks dealt with injuries to shortstop Geraldo Perdomo and center fielder Alek Thomas among the position-player group, and four-fifths of their anticipated starting rotation has spent time on the injured list.
‘It’s been a grind’: Eduardo Rodriguez set for Diamondbacks debut after long rehab road
Diamondbacks make series of roster moves
In addition to Moreno being played on the IL and Del Castillo’s contract being selected from Reno, the Diamondbacks reinstated left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez from the 60-day IL and transferred right-hander Bryce Jarvis from the 15-day IL to the 60-day IL.
Jarvis, who went down with an elbow injury last week, had been expected to miss the rest of the season anyway, so the move is mostly procedural, opening a spot on the 40-man roster.
Right-hander Humberto Castellanos also was optioned to Reno.
Wednesday’s Diamondbacks-Guardians pitching matchup
Diamondbacks at Guardians, 10:10 a.m., Cox, Ch. 34
Diamondbacks RHP Brandon Pfaadt (5-6, 3.97) vs. Guardians RHP Carlos Carrasco (3-9, 5.53).
At Progressive Field: Pfaadt gave up three runs in five innings against the Pirates on Friday, the second consecutive start in which Pittsburgh gave him trouble. … It was the first time since June 7 that a healthy Pfaadt failed to get through six innings. (He left his start on July 6 at San Diego after being hit on the ankle by a line drive.) … Pfaadt has never faced the Guardians. … Carrasco, 37, is in his 15th big league season. The year has mostly been a struggle for him. He rarely pitches deep into games (at least six innings in only four of 20 starts) and has given up three runs or more in 10 of his 20 starts. … He dominated the Diamondbacks when he faced them last season while with the New York Mets, throwing eight scoreless innings in a start at Chase Field.
