Gov. Andy Beshear returns to Eastern Kentucky for flood support
Gov. Andy Beshear made stops between Wayland and Jackson, Kentucky, where he checked in on new housing for victims affected by the flood in 2022.
Vice President Kamala Harris has officially picked a running mate for her presidential campaign, and it’s not Gov. Andy Beshear.
But does that mean he’s firmly planted in Kentucky?
Well …
The past few weeks have made it clear Beshear is looking ahead at his political future, and the second-term governor could still have a shot in Washington, D.C. — whether through a cabinet position or a different national seat.
“Eventually, Kamala Harris is going to have to think about putting together an administration, and it could be that he’s signaling interest in joining the team in some other way,” said Stephen Voss, a University of Kentucky political science professor.
Here’s a look at what’s next for Beshear and his political career:
How has Beshear built his national reputation?
Over the past couple of weeks, Beshear has made multiple national media appearances and visits to other states.
He gave the keynote speech at the Iowa Democratic Party’s Liberty & Justice Celebration and rallied in Georgia for Harris’ campaign with Hadley Duvall, a Kentucky abortion-rights advocate who appeared in an ad for President Joe Biden.
Beshear will likely continue to campaign for Harris and her reported running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. He’s also slated to the attend the Democratic National Convention in Chicago from Aug. 19 – 22.
Even prior to the speculation surrounding the Democrats’ vice presidential pick reaching fever pitch in July, Beshear had started taking steps to build his national profile.
That included founding his national political action committee called In This Together, which aims at helping elect Democrats in red and purple states.
What else could Beshear run for?
Because of Kentucky’s term limits, Beshear will not be able to run for governor again when his term ends in 2027.
That means he could start soon laying the groundwork for other campaigns.
If U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell decides not to run again, Democratic campaign manager Danny Briscoe said Beshear could consider a 2026 run for senate.
However, Beshear does not want to run for that role, said his political strategist Eric Hyers.
Asked what Beshear will do when his term ends in 2028, Hyers said, “I’m not sure he’s got those plans yet.”
