The recent announcement by the United States to pause more than $95 million in assistance to the Government of Georgia, following a comprehensive review of bilateral cooperation, is a decision that I believe to be misguided and detrimental. Such a move risks pushing Georgia into greater instability and creates an opportunity for increased Russian influence in the region.
Georgia stands at a critical juncture in its democratic journey. The country’s progress, despite the challenges it faces, underscores the importance of continued support from the United States. For over three decades, U.S. assistance has played a pivotal role in the development and strengthening of Georgia’s economy and democratic institutions. This support has not only built schools and hospitals, but also trained teachers, civil servants and medical professionals. Our investments have equipped and trained Georgia’s Defense Forces and Coast Guard, directly contributing to the nation’s security and stability.
Pausing assistance now sends the wrong message to both the people of Georgia and the broader international community. It signals a retreat from our commitment to support the Republic of Georgia during a time when it most needs our steadfast support. Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations are aligned with the values of democracy, rule of law, and economic development, values that the United States has historically championed.
Furthermore, continued assistance is essential for the advancement of democracy and the strengthening of critical institutions within Georgia. Supporting teachers, hospitals, medical professionals, and other democratic institutions is crucial as Georgia navigates its path toward a stable and prosperous future. Abandoning these efforts now would undermine the progress made and jeopardize the future prospects of a key ally in the Caucasus region.
It is imperative that the United States remains committed to supporting the Republic of Georgia. By doing so, we not only uphold our values, but also contribute to the stability and security of the region. It is a time to bolster our support, not withdraw it. Georgia’s journey toward democracy is ongoing, and it is our responsibility to stand by them as they strive to achieve their aspirations.
