Jared Sullinger brought Ohio State basketball fans back in time on Sunday.
With a turnaround jumper, the former Buckeye forward hit the ‘Elam Ending’ shot — i.e. the target score game-winning shot — to win “The Basketball Tournament” for Carmen’s Crew, Ohio State’s Alumni Team, at Drexel University’s Daskalakis Athletic Center in Philadelphia.

It is the second time that Carmen’s Crew has won the $1 million tournament and the first since 2019, when Sullinger then served as the team’s coach. Carmen’s Crew beat Forever Coogs, the University of Houston alumni team, 69-65 on Sunday.
“For 10 months searching for a championship!!! From Shenzhen to Santurce and now TBT. I FINALLY GOT IT!!! BOY IS IT SWEET,” Sullinger wrote on X (formerly Twitter) after the game.
He added to The Philadelphia Inquirer on the shot itself: “I didn’t see (the shot). I was on the ground, and next thing you know, all I saw was red shirts saying, ‘Yeah, you did it!’ … It was great.”
Here’s a look at the Sullinger pushing the Zelle button to initiate the deposit of the cash prize. Each member of the team received a payout of $62,500.
Structured like March Madness with 64 teams and single-game elimination, “The Basketball Tournament” has become a popular sporting event over the years teams — either college alumni teams or teams that are playing for a cause — play for the $1 million cash prize.
Another contributing part of that popularity is what makes TBT different than other basketball tournaments, as all games end with an ‘Elam Ending’ shot, or game-winning shot. At the four-minute mark in the fourth quarter, the game stops at the next change of possession or a timeout is called and a target score is set, a set number added to the score of the team that is winning at that moment. The first to reach the target score wins the game.
To win the 2024 The Basketball Tournament, Carmen’s Crew defeated Purple Heart in the first round, Red Scare (Dayton Alumni Team) in the second round, 1-seed Heart Fire in the third round, Takeover BC in the quarterfinals, La Familia (Kentucky Alumni Team) in the semifinals and Forever Coogs (Houston Alumni) in the championship game.
