On the field, Georgia football is among the elite in all college sports. Winners of two of the last three College Football Playoff titles, Georgia has stayed within the top ten of the final CFP rankings each season since 2016, their first year under head coach Kirby Smart. Georgia quickly morphed into a powerhouse under Smart, going from 8-5 in his inaugural season to three straight seasons of at least 11 wins.
However, Georgia has struggled to maintain a favorable image off the field, with 47 arrests ending in reckless driving or DUI charges during Smart’s tenure. On Monday, reports surfaced through social media that the Georgia Bulldogs also have the lowest graduation rate among Power Four football programs since 2016.

According to the College Football Report on Twitter, Georgia football has the lowest graduation rate among Power Four college football programs since 2016, the first year under head coach Kirby Smart. Per the report, only 41% of Georgia Bulldogs football athletes graduate, effortlessly the lowest among their Power Four peers. For reference, the UCLA Bruins football program is second to last at 64%, followed by the Houston Cougars at 67% and the Michigan State Spartans at 69%. Meanwhile, Clemson football has the highest graduation rate at 99%.
Did some digging into what the NCAA considers for Graduation Success Rate (GSR)
• Players that leave early for the pros are factored out
• Players that transfer out are excluded
So, this is an even worse look for UGA than originally thought… pic.twitter.com/6dffB39Iyw

Per the NCAA, the Graduation Success Rate, or GSR, does not include players who leave school early for the NFL or athletes who transfer out of the program. Additionally, graduation must occur within six years of initial enrollment. Midyear enrollees and nonscholarship athletes are calculated using the graduation rate. Also, those student-athletes who leave the school while ineligible are considered non-graduates.
Georgia: Struggling with Off-the-Field IssuesGeorgia quarterback Carson Beck (15) Throws a pass to Georgia wide receiver Rara Thomas (9) during the G-Day spring football game in Athens, Ga., on Saturday, April 13, 2024. Georgia football has had a rough stretch of off-the-field incidents regarding legal problems under head coach Kirby Smart. Since 2016, his first season in Athens, Georgia, the Bulldogs have had 47 incidents or arrests for reckless driving or DUI. More alarmingly, more than half have occurred after the fatal high-speed car accident that took the lives of offensive lineman Devin Willock and staffer Chandler LeCroy hours after the post-championship parade in 2023.
Last week, a felony charge of cruelty to children and two misdemeanor charges of battery fell at the feet of another Georgia football player, wide receiver RaRa Thomas. The speedy wide receiver, projected for a significant role in 2024, was indefinitely suspended from Georgia football. It is Thomas’ second arrest since joining the Bulldogs, being detained on a felony charge of false imprisonment and a misdemeanor charge of family violence in 2023. The prosecution and Thomas eventually reached a deal, with the former dropping charges.
