The Kansas City Chiefs have certainly had what one might consider to be an eventful offseason. There were, of course, legal issues surrounding a couple of players. Wide receiver Rashee Rice was involved in a high-speed car accident that injured several people. He is currently facing a lawsuit brought against him by the victims. Isaiah Buggs was released by the team following a couple of arrests of his own, one for domestic violence.
All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce made headlines with his frequent trips to visit his girlfriend, 14-time Grammy Award winner Taylor Swift, on the European leg of her Eras Tour. This, of course, continued the story of their relationship that was a popular topic among NFL fans last season.
And then there was kicker Harrison Butker, whose commencement speech at a Catholic college angered many.

During his speech at Benedictine College, Butker made several controversial statements regarding a handful of marginalized groups in society. His comments regarding women and his belief that their highest calling is to be homemakers especially angered many.
However, he also made comments attacking members of the LBGTQ+ community:
“I am certain the reporters at the AP could not have imagined that their attempt to rebuke and embarrass places and people like those here at Benedictine wouldn’t be met with anger, but instead met with excitement and pride. Not the deadly sin sort of pride that has an entire month dedicated to it, but the true God-centered pride that is cooperating with the Holy Ghost to glorify him.”
Butker’s teammates on the Chiefs have stood by his side during the backlash he has received for his comments, though they have made sure to let the public know that his views do not mirror their own.

As many conservatives were, Butker was not happy with a performance during the 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony that, they thought, had depicted the famous painting “The Last Supper” by Renaissance artist Leonardo di Vinci.
Butker posted the following regarding the performance:
“Be not deceived, God is not mocked. For what things a man shall sow, those also shall he reap. For he that soweth in his flesh, of the flesh also shall reap corruption. But he that soweth in the spirit, of the spirit shall reap life everlasting.”

Many conservatives took to social media to express similar views to the one Butker posted.
Unfortunately, their comments display a lack of knowledge of history and Renaissance art. The performance in question was not a depiction of “The Last Supper” (which, as mentioned, was painted by di Vinci, whom scholars agree was a member of the LGBTQ+ community).
Instead, it was a depiction of a Greek bacchanal, which was an ancient celebration of the god Dionysus. As many are aware, the Olympics were started in ancient Greece.

Dionysus was, in later eras of ancient Greek history, known as the god of wine and festivities.
Butker quoted Galatians, saying “Do not be deceived.” It appears that his lack of awareness deceived him this time.
