The back-to-back Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs are beginning their road towards a third consecutive Super Bowl trip this month with training camp.
Thus far, training camp has gone well for Kansas City as they haven’t dealt with a ton of notable injuries outside Justin Reid, Nazeeh Johnson, and Justin Watson. However, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid provided an interesting injury update on star-studded defensive lineman Chris Jones, who didn’t practice on Sunday.
Reid told reporters after practice that Jones is dealing with a groin strain that kept him out of practice, per Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com. According to Pete Sweeney of Arrowhead Pride, the Chiefs head coach didn’t “seem overly concerned” about Jones’ injury.
Andy Reid says Chris Jones dealing with a groin strain today that kept him out. CB Nazeeh Johnson tweaked his right knee with the ACL repair.

Andy Reid adds he believes Johnson is going to be “fine.” Reid calls his leg strong, sounds precautionary. He also didn’t seem overly concerned about Chris Jones. https://t.co/LPmPPT0WBE

If you are a Chiefs fan, you are taking a huge sigh of relief that Jones’ injury isn’t anything to worry about. Anytime you see a player at training camp with a helmet not on, you immediately think that said player is hurt or has an off day.
The Chiefs will likely take things slow with Jones as soft tissue injuries can become nuisances and linger throughout the season if not properly treated. That said, with Jones sidelined by the groin injury, this is a great opportunity for Mike Pennel and Treshawn Wharton to get reps with the first team.
Wharton was the starting three-tech for Jones, with Pennel starting at nose tackle, per Ron Kopp Jr. of Arrowhead Pride.
No surprise but Tershawn Wharton is the starting 3-tech with Chris Jones sitting out today #Chiefs

The Chiefs’ first preseason game isn’t until August 10 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, so there’s still time for Jones to heal and be ready to pick up some preseason reps.
