At ACC Media Days last week in Charlotte, Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones didn’t sugarcoat his expectations for the Hokies in 2024. A lot of the success the Hokies end up having will depend on Drones and how well he plays and if he stays healthy.
Health was the one big reason why he started Week 3 last fall after Grant Wells was injured in Week 2 against Rutgers, which opened the door for the Baylor transfer to take over. Once he got his feet under him in Tyler Bowen’s offense, he took off and helped the Hokies recover from a 1-3 start to win six of their final nine games to finish 7-6.
A lot of eyes are going to be on Virginia Tech going into this season and NFL scouts will be watching Drones and some of his teammates closely. There are a lot of good QBs in the ACC in 2024, including Washington State transfer Cam Ward who will play at Miami, the Hokies’ first ACC opponent on Sept. 27. Syracuse will have Ohio State transfer Kyle McCord under center, but despite the talent in the conference this fall, one college football analyst had a bold take for Drones this season.
Carl Reed said that he thinks Drones is going to push Ward for ACC Player of the Year honors by the end of the season and that the Hokies are his dark horse this season in the conference with the NFL talent scouts are telling him about.
Just hear me out! By season’s end, the best player in the ACC very well could be Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones.

Again, the ACC is loaded with talent this season, especially at quarterback, and whoever emerges as the best will certainly earn it. Drones, Ward, and Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders all have been working out in the offseason and pushing each other. All three figure to have their names called at the 2025 Draft in Green Bay, but this fall, a Ward/Drones battle will be fun to watch in Week 5 in South Florida and then the rest of the season. To think that Drones can push Ward this season is a statement that not many people expected to hear not too long ago, but it shows where the Hokies have come and are going under Brent Pry.
