BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – After competing against him for four seasons, Indiana has shown interest in Iowa transfer Tony Perkins.
Perkins entered the transfer portal on Tuesday and heard from Ole Miss, Arizona State, Arkansas, Mizzou, Oklahoma, Indiana, Nebraska, UCLA, Miami and BYU in the first hour, according to The Portal Report.
Perkins is a 6-foot-4 guard with one year of eligibility. He started 81 games and played in 126 across four years under coach Fran McCaffery. Perkins’ production increased every season, going from a freshman who didn’t play much to Iowa’s second-leading scorer as a senior.
In 2023-24, Perkins averaged a career-high 14 points, 4.6 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game while shooting 43.2% from the field, 29.9% from 3-point range and 78.8% at the free throw line. He’s a career 31.7% 3-point shooter across 199 attempts.
Perkins committed to Iowa as a three-star guard, ranked No. 314 in the nation out of Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis, Ind. where he was teammates with CJ Gunn, who recently entered the transfer portal. Iowa was Perkins’ only high-major offer, according to 247 Sports. Among Indiana recruits in the class of 2020, he was ranked below Khristian Lander, Jaden Ivey, Dre Davis, Nijel Pack, Anthony Leal, Trey Galloway and Kiyron Powell.
Going up against his home-state school, Indiana, Perkins and the Hawkeyes had a 4-3 record. In those contests, Perkins played especially well in his final two games against Indiana. On Feb. 28, 2023 at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, Perkins finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists in a 90-68 win. The following season, Perkins scored 22 points in a 74-68 loss at Assembly Hall.
Indiana currently has seven open scholarships heading into the 2024-25 season, the fourth under coach Mike Woodson. Kel’el Ware declared for the draft on Tuesday, and Xavier Johnson and Anthony Walker are out of eligibility. CJ Gunn, Kaleb Banks and Payton Sparks have each entered the transfer portal, with Sparks heading back to Ball State, where he began his career.
