We are now four weeks away from Florida State football’s 2024 season opener versus Georgia Tech in Dublin, Ireland. Can you believe it? It seems like just yesterday, we were talking about being one hundred days away.
College football is about to be in the air once again as the Seminoles will be losing to replicate its success from a season ago when it accomplished a regular season and a conference championship. However, there is a sour taste in the mouths of those who are associated with Florida State after the College Football Playoff Committee snubbed them of an opportunity to compete for a national championship.
Head football coach Mike Norvell and his squad will be looking to prove the doubters wrong and showcase that they belong in the new 12-team College Football Playoff. However, the Seminoles brought in several newcomers that are looking to make an impact.
In honor of the season beginning in four weeks, I wanted to highlight two players on the Seminoles’ roster that wear the number four jersey in redshirt senior quarterback DJ Uiagalelei and true freshman cornerback Charles Lester III (who are ironically newcomers).
QB DJ UIAGALELEI
Florida State will have its hands full as they look to replace the do-it-all signal-caller Jordan Travis. The West Palm Beach native meant everything to this university. The coaching staff decided to bring in former Clemson and Oregon State quarterback transfer DJ Uiagalelei.
Uiagalelei has had an up-and-down collegiate career where he was benched with Clemson and performed well with Oregon State. Norvell has a way of scheming up an offense to showcase a quarterback’s strengths. Uiagalelei’s strength is his ability to throw the football downfield. I expect to hear the Seminoles’ fight song quite a bit from the Marching Chiefs this season.
CB CHARLES LESTER III
Florida State defensive backs coach Patrick Surtain Sr. did a tremendous job acquiring prospects in the 2024 recruiting cycle for the secondary. He secured four-star recruits Charles Lester III, Jamari Howard, Cai Bates, and Ricky Knight III. With the Seminoles utilizing a 4-2-5 defensive scheme at times, these young defensive backs could have an opportunity to play.
Lester III is a highly-touted prospect who played on both sides of the football at Venice High School. However, his length and playmaking ability stood out to the coaching staff. While it is difficult for true freshmen to see the field in Year 1, Lester III’s potential might be too much for the Seminoles to ignore.
