The Milwaukee Brewers and Colorado Rockies have agreed to a trade that is sending Nick Mears to the Brew Crew in exchange for two prospects. In this deal Milwaukee parted ways with pitchers Bradley Blalock and Yujanjer Herrera.

27 year old Nick Mears is a pitcher who has team control through the 2027 season with the caveat of having no minor league options remaining. He will begin his first of three arbitration years this off-season. His career 4.93 ERA is not eye-catching but his fastball has incredible value as it already averages 97 MPH and he gets great extension resulting in more perceived velocity. Additionally he has a slider mid 80s, and curveball low 80s.

40-man roster member Bradley Blalock is one pitcher the Brewers gave up in this trade. He was acquired at last year’s trade deadline when Milwaukee sent Luis Urias to the Boston Red Sox. Blalock made one big league appearance this year.
The other pitcher surrendered by the Brewers was 20 year old Yujanjer Herrera. He has split time as a starter and reliever in the minor leagues and this year owned a 2.91 ERA between the Low-A Carolina Mudcats and High-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. His career minor league ERA is 5.05.

One goal the Brewers have before the July 30 trade deadline is to add pitchers who can provide length. Nick Mears does not fit that category, but as mentioned there is a ton of upside with him. Expect Milwaukee to continue to be active in the pitching market.
