Ohio State has fallen into territory it has not seen in a very long time: unable to beat its rival Michigan. Since Ryan Day became the Buckeyes head coach in 2019, he has only beaten the Wolverines once, and that was in his first season with all of Urban Meyer’s players.
Ohio State Drops Three Straight To MichiganDec 29, 2023; Arlington, Texas, USA; Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day sings “Carmen Ohio” following the 14-3 loss to the Missouri Tigers in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic at AT&T Stadium.
In November 2021, things changed in the rivalry, and Michigan and head coach Jim Harbaugh finally got a win, which seemed like a fluke at the time. Then, they went to Columbus in 2022 and destroyed Ohio State. They beat them at home again last season and then won the national championship.
Michigan has owned this rivalry for the past three years, and Ryan Day seems clueless about what is happening.
Big Ten Media days kicked off this week, and Day spoke about how 12 guys decided to return to school instead of leaving for the NFL Draft, and one of the main decisions for them returning was to get another chance at Michigan.
These are the same players who have had three different chances to beat their rivals, and now they are excited to come back and get ready to beat them when the Wolverines lose their head coach, quarterback, and most of their roster.
ESPN college football expert Paul Finebaum was on First Take on Tuesday morning and suggested that Day should be fired if he doesn’t beat Michigan this season.
Paul Finebaum Seems To Be Making Sense, But Should Day Be FiredDec 29, 2023; Arlington, Texas, USA; Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Lincoln Kienholz (12) talks to Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day in the third quarter against Missouri Tigers during the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic at AT&T Stadium.
Finebaum does bring up a good point that if Day drops a fourth straight game to Michigan, which will be played at home this season with maybe the best roster in the county and a Wolverine team that saw most of their players and coaching staff leave, he should get fired.

The only thing is that Day has been a great head coach outside of that game. With the new era of college football starting with the new 12-team playoff, beating Michigan isn’t a must anymore if you want to get in.
Dec 3, 2023; Columbus, Ohio, USA; Ohio State University footbal coach Ryan Day looks dejected as he describes getting shut out of the CFP and going to the Cotton Bowl to face Missouri.
If this were 20 years ago, Day would get fired because beating Michigan is Ohio State’s number one goal. But times are different now, and rivalries aren’t as big as they once were. If Day has the Buckeyes in a position to win the title every single year, he’s not getting fired, and even if he does drop the game to the Wolverines once again and still manages to make the playoffs and have a great run, he isn’t going anywhere.
