Democratic lawmakers react to Biden dropping out of 2024 election
Democratic representatives shared their thoughts on the next steps in the presidential nomination process ahead of the Democratic National Convention.
President Joe Biden’s exit from the 2024 presidential race is just one of several recent unprecedented events of 2024 — and there are still over five months left in the year. How many unprecedented events have you lived through? Here are a few:
July 25: Oldest person in the US is a Texan, and she’ll be 115
Houston resident Elizabeth Francis was born on July 25, 1909. Last year, she celebrated her 114th birthday with her three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. Francis was also gifted a Texas-shaped plaque with the title “Oldest Living Texan.”
July 21: Biden withdraws from presidential campaign
Although this is not the first time a president has dropped a reelection campaign, Biden is the first to do so under current campaign finance laws. The current president announced Sunday he would withdraw from the race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the position.
On March 31, 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson appeared on national television to announce the partial halting of the U.S. bombing of Vietnam and that he would not be seeking reelection. Since then, no incumbent president eligible to run again has stepped away from seeking a second term — until just days ago.
July 19: Global tech outage disrupts flights, hospitals and 911 centers
Last Friday, Austin-based cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike was deemed responsible for a worldwide IT outage. An issue with an update disrupted Microsoft Office 365 apps, which prompted errors affecting flights, hospitals, banks, and more across the globe.
July 13: Man attempts to assassinate former President Donald Trump
Former President Donald Trump was shot in the ear while attending a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania in an assassination attempt. Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old man from Bethel Park, shot at Trump with an assault rifle. He killed one rally attendee and critically injured two others before being killed by members of the Secret Service. Despite his injuries, Trump attended and spoke at the 2024 Republican National Convention the following week.
July 8: Beryl prompts record number of tornado warnings
On July 8, Hurricane Beryl broke the record for the most tornado warnings on a single day in July in the U.S. A total of 110 tornado warnings were issued across Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas. The previous record was 67.

July 1-2: Beryl becomes earliest Cat 4, Cat 5 hurricane
Beryl broke several other records as a tropical storm and hurricane. On the first of the month, it beat the 2005 record held by Hurricane Dennis as the earliest Category 4 hurricane. On July 2, Beryl broke another 2005 record, which was held by Hurricane Emily, for the earliest Category 5 hurricane.
June 29: First Ghanaian crowned Miss Texas
Annette Addo-Yobo of North Texas won the title of Miss Texas 2024, becoming the first immigrant-born and the first Ghanaian to do so. In an Instagram post, Addo-Yobo said she was “humbled, honored, and grateful” to be the 87th Miss Texas and hoped to “continue making history with the Texas community and the Miss Texas class.”
June 22: Oldest contestant competes in Miss Texas USA pageant
At age 71, Marissa Teijo of El Paso made history as the oldest contestant in the Miss Texas USA pageant. Although she didn’t win the Miss Texas USA contest, she said competing against 100 other women motivated her to chase her dreams.
June 15: George Strait breaks attendance record at Kyle Fields
George Strait performed a concert at Texas A&M’s Kyle Fields for a shocking 110,905 fans on Sunday, June 15 — breaking the U.S. record for the most-attended ticketed concert. The record was previously held by the Grateful Dead for a New Jersey concert in 1977.
June 10: World’s largest Buc-ee’s opens in Luling
Buc-ee’s opened the largest travel center in the world in Luling, about 51 miles south of Austin. At a whopping 75,000 square feet, it’s roughly 1.5 times as big as an NFL football field.
April 8: Solar eclipse shrouds Texas for first time in 626 years
Prior to the 2024 event that millions gathered in Texas to witness, Austin hadn’t been covered in darkness by a total solar eclipse since 1397. And Central Texas isn’t expected to see another until Feb. 25, 2343.
March 22: Texas’ deadliest school bus crash since 2015
A student and a motorist lost their lives after a Hays school bus was involved in an accident on Texas 21. Riding aboard the bus were 11 adults and 44 prekindergarten students returning from a field trip to the Capital of Texas Zoo. The tragedy was the deadliest crash involving a school bus in Texas since 2015 when a Houston crash killed two teenagers.
March 7: Largest, costliest wildfire in Texas history
Earlier this year, the Smokehouse Creek Fire in the Texas Panhandle became the largest wildfire in Texas history. Shortly after breaking that record, it also earned the title of costliest wildfire in the state’s history for agricultural losses. The Smokehouse Creek Fire burned over one million acres and claimed two lives.
Feb. 28: Great white shark tracked farther west in Gulf of Mexico
A great white shark named LeeBeth made history when she was tracked farther west into the Gulf of Mexico than any other of her species. Capt. Chip Michalove of Outcast Sport Fishing reported LeeBeth a mere 200 yards from the shore of South Padre Island on Feb. 28.
Jan. 1: UT plays in the College Football Playoff for the first time
To kick off 2024, the University of Texas made its first appearance in the College Football Playoff. Texas played as the No. 3 seed along with No. 1 Michigan, No. 2 Washington and No. 4 Alabama. Before this year, Texas hadn’t made the college football’s title game since 2009, when the Bowl Championship Series system was being used.
