As the consensus has continued to grow around Texas A&M football signal caller Conner Weigman as one of the top quarterbacks in the country, he’s been put under more and more of a microscope. The Aggie QB has flashed big time in his snaps so far in an A&M uniform, leading to quite a bit of hype surrounding him and his abilities.
One problem that critics have latched on to, though, is the idea that Weigman may be lacking in availability, based on the fact that he has only played eight games in two years. This chatter has grown louder and louder recently—is it fair?
Texags editor Billy Liucci doesn’t think so. Addressing the issue on radio today, Liucci pointed to the specific reasons that Weigman has missed time thus far in his career to help quell whatever concerns (whether legitimate or feigned on the part of opponents) were being discussed.
After being tapped for the starting job in 2022, Weigman only missed one start he could have otherwise made, and that was due to a flu outbreak that rendered half of the Aggie team unable to play against Florida. Even though he took some big hits against Ole Miss and Auburn, Weigman gutted it out, eventually leading the Ags to a win over #6 LSU in the season’s finale.
In year two, as we all know, he sustained an injury against Auburn after a free rusher dove for his legs. Though it turned out that this injury caused him to miss an extended period of time, it’s really only one injury.
The issue, in other words, doesn’t seem to be durability. Thinking about what could happen with this Aggie team going forward, if Weigman is standing behind an improved OL, that should do a lot to make him more durable in any case.
Health will be a key factor for this Aggie team in 2024, and for #15 most of all. Though unfortunate circumstances have led to his missing a large number of games thus far, I’m not concerned going forward based off of anything that has led him to miss time thus far.
