Will things be different for the Colorado Buffaloes this season? Will they be worth the hype after all? These questions haunt the thoughts of all Buffs’ fans as they await the start of the season. But with the itching excitement also comes a wave of worries as fans constantly tout the team to be nothing but a product of media hype. Yet, this Colorado alumni believes that there’s a bigger picture to be seen here amid all the doubts regarding Coach Prime and his team.
The Colorado Buffaloes have been on a recruitment frenzy ever since the 2023 season ended. As per On3, Deion Sanders set a record this year by bringing in 41 new additions from the portal, making them the number 1 team to have the most transfers during the 2023-24 transfer portal window. Along with new players, Deion has also brought in an extra few pairs of hands to help him out, something which often gets overlooked while discussing the new and improved roster of the Buffs. This is exactly what Matt McChesney pointed out as he assured the fans of a different team than the 2023 team which bombed out at the bottom.

In an interview with the ‘Zero 2 Sixty Podcast’, Matt McChesney proceeded to talk about his opinion of the new offensive line of his alma mater and also went on to talk about the two conditions that the critics miss while spewing fire on the team and drawing comparisons to their 2023 season.
Do you think Coach Prime’s critics are being too harsh on Colorado’s progress?
Yes, they need to give him more time
No, the criticism is justified

McChesney broke it down and said, “The dumbest thing you can do is two things. Coach Prime isn’t going to improve his roster based on last year and then the second part, that they’re not going to develop under Loadholt and Warren Sapp and Lewis, and all these ex-pros.” These are rightfully said comments as all these coaches have tonnes of experience and having a Hall of Famer, Warren Sapp, is yet another valuable addition to the team that tends to get shadowed by the Buffs’ failure to make their mark last season. With that being said, let’s take a look at the changes that Deion made to the coaching staff this year, all of which are carefully thought-out decisions that bring priceless qualities to the table.

Coach Prime is more than excited to lead the team under new ex-pro coaches
The Colorado Buffaloes went under a whole new revamp when Deion Sanders first arrived in Boulder in 2023 and this season wasn’t any different. Especially after the poor season last year, there was more pressure on the shoulders of the HC to go and make major changes to the roster and as such, Deion went a step further and got new coaches as well. Back in February, Deion announced the coaching staff updates for the 2024 season with 3 new additions.

The new staff members are DC Robert Livingston, OL coach, Phil Loadholt, and WR coach Jason Phillips. Livingston was with the Cincinnati Bengals last year and led the team to Super Bowl LVI but is now with the Buffaloes to help them reach similar levels of glory. While talking about the hiring of Livingston, Deion was ecstatic about welcoming an ex-NFL coach to the team.
He said, “Oh my God, just the opportunity. We needed a defensive coordinator. I’m a pro. That’s nothing against the college coaches, because we have some phenomenal college coaches, especially in this conference, but I’m a pro. So I like the relationships and the thought process of a pro, and coach Livingston was recommended to me by a few pros that I’m well familiar with and I trust, Mike Zimmer being one of them.” The gradual rise of the Colorado Buffaloes seems to be unfolding within our very eyes but all of these valuable additions will only be worth it if the team can give a proportional performance on the gridiron, something which has lacked for the team since they talk the talk but end up failing in walking the walk.
