Newly-signed undrafted WR Kyle Sheets got off to a quick start with the Chiefs, making an impressive catch during the team’s 7-on-7 drill. There’s limited competition at this unofficial practice portion of training camp, though Sheets is making a name for himself regardless.
After originally getting an opportunity with the New Orleans Saints, Sheets joined Kansas City on Wednesday following an electric college career that saw him twice earn D-II All-American honors at Slippery Rock.
Sheets faces an uphill battle to make the roster, though he’s got a chance to stick on the practice squad if he keeps this up.
The second day of rookie camp is in the books! A few standouts:
🏈 WR Jaaron Hayek made a great, leaping catch down the sideline during 7-on-7
🏈 WR Kyle Sheets, who signed with KC yesterday, made an impressive grab in the back of the end zone during 7-on-7

At six-foot-four, Sheets has excellent size and athleticism that make him stand out from the Chiefs’ current crop of receivers. Xavier Worthy, Hollywood Brown, Mecole Hardman, Skyy Moore, and Kadarius Toney are all relatively small, giving Sheets’ skillset a chance to shine.
It’s notable that Kansas City’s quarterbacks looked his way during 7-on-7. If he’s getting targets just 24 hours after signing, he could carve out a role once he gets up to speed.

Sheets had 154 receptions for 2,440 yards and 29 touchdowns over 51 games at Slippery Rock, showcasing impressive hands and prowess as a deep threat.
The Chiefs want to get back to the exciting offenses of Patrick Mahomes’ early years. Bringing speedsters like Worthy and Brown to the team prove that point, and Sheets fits a similar mold albeit with a much bigger frame.
Training camp officially starts on July 21 but these unofficial practices give Sheets the opportunity to stand out and develop before everyone arrives. It’s unlikely that he makes a significant impact with the organization but either way, it’s nice to see the rookie shining in practice.
One undrafted receiver from last year, Nikko Remigio, is pushing for a roster spot. Who says Sheets can’t do the same next year?
