The Kansas City Chiefs have players battling injury before training camp. Rookies reported to training camp on Tuesday. Veterans will return for training camp on Saturday.
The Chiefs had one important injury hanging over their heads during OTAs this spring: Joe Thuney. Thuney suffered a pec injury during the playoffs last season, keeping him out of the Chiefs’ Super Bowl win over the San Francisco 49ers.

Per a transcription by Sports Illustrated of Chiefs head coach Andy Reid’s comments in June about Thuney’s injury progress, the three-time All-Pro guard was making “good progress” in his rehab this offseason:
“Joe’s working his tail off and getting better,” Reid said. “We’ve got to see exactly how that thing works — we’ve got to get clearance from the doctor and that whole process that goes on as we go. But he’s making good progress. He’ll be one of those guys that’s kind of right on the border of whether he can go or not go from the healing part of it.”

The Chiefs believe Thuney will be able to start in Week 1 unless he suffers a setback this summer. Thuney’s presence is needed on the offensive line, and he is arguably one of the best guards in the league. Per Matt Derrick with Chiefs Digest, Thuney will start training camp on the physically unable to perform list.

Defensive end Charles Omenihu, who suffered an ACL injury in the AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens, is starting training camp on the PUP list. Defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi suffered a triceps injury in the playoffs and is on the PUP list. Cornerback Jaylen Watson is on the PUP list after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum he played through last season.
Defensive end BJ Thompson suffered a cardiac arrest during OTAs this spring. He will start training camp on the non-football injury list.
Andy Reid says DE BJ Thompson will start camp on non-football injury list. LG Joe Thuney, DE Charles Omenihu, DT Derrick Nnadi and CB Jaylen Watson will probably start camp on the PUP list.
