The countdown to kickoff is on as we are less than 50 days away from Penn State football at West Virginia. As week one approaches, so does the anticipation and build-up for the season’s first game. Throughout this past week, the Big 12 Media Days took place where Mountaineers head coach Neal Brown discussed his thoughts on the opportunity ahead of hosting the Nittany Lions.
On Wednesday, July 10 Neal Brown spoke to the media at Big 12 Media Days in Las Vegas. The perception around the Mountaineer head coach is much more positive heading into 2024 than a year ago. West Virginia went on to earn a record of 9-4 (6-3 in conference) and with that turn around the Mountaineer fan base is also rejuvenated in the program.
This creates a challenge for the Penn State football team. This is something Brown has recognized ahead of the week one matchup.
“The Big Noon show will be there, so we’re fired up about that [matchup with Penn State]. Our fans will be ready for that, too. I think we’ll show well on national television. But it’s not just a big game for West Virginia. It’s a big game for our league.”
Looking for revenge in 2023
One of the major criticisms against Neal Brown is his lack of success in week one games. In his career, Brown is 0-9 in week one games where his team is playing against an FBS team according to Mike Casazza of 247Sports.
James Franklin and the Nittany Lions contributed to that loss column last season in Happy Valley. As the Penn State football team went on to defeat West Virginia 38-15. But make no mistake Franklin certainly has respect for Brown. Ahead of the season opener last year, Franklin expressed those feelings.
“Obviously Neal Brown, I have a ton of respect for Neal. His background as an offensive coordinator and as a head coach…”
But that feeling might not be shared heading into the 2024 season opener from Neal Brown. If you remember from last season QB Beau Pribula scored a late touchdown on the Nittany Lion’s final drive where they already led 31-15. Following the game, Brown commented on and was upset by Franklin’s decision to keep the offense in attack mode.
“I wouldn’t have done it, but it doesn’t bother me,” Brown said. “Stuff like that, what comes around goes around. At some point, it’ll come back around. I don’t know when. It doesn’t bother me. I’m not upset about it.”
Penn State will play West Virginia on August 31 where kickoff is set for noon EST.
