A couple of years ago, the Ohio State football team had a big problem with keeping their running backs healthy. Both TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams were both hurt off and on in the 2022 season. Henderson actually had to have surgery on his foot afterwards to fix the injury.
Last season, Williams had his season cut short because of a knee injury. Henderson also only played in ten out of a possible 13 games last year. Ohio State was hoping to get a season of healthy running backs this season, especially after adding Quinshon Judkins in the transfer portal.
Adding Judkins was something the Buckeyes needed to do in order to protect themselves from another Henderson injury. Besides those two backs, they don’t have anyone who has meaningful playing time. Unfortunately, they just lost a running back possibly for a season.
Ohio State’s depth at running back has taken another hit. TC Caffey, a walk-on, will now likely miss the season because of a knee injury according to Dave Biddle of Bucknuts. Even though he’s a walk-on, the Ohio State football team was hoping he could provide some depth if needed.
With Caffey likely gone, the Buckeyes will now need to rely on some freshmen to pick up the slack if either Henderson or Judkins gets hurt. That’s not something that is ideal for a team that is slated to run the ball more now that Chip Kelly is running the offense.
Caffey wasn’t likely to see regular playing time this year, but he was probably going to see some snaps. James Peoples and Sam Williams-Dixon will now have to be relied on if Henderson or Judkins gets hurt. They are both true freshman. That’s not a situation the Buckeyes want to be in.
Perhaps the injury ends up not being as bad as what it sounds like now. Either way, we hope for Caffey to have a speedy recovery.
