George Stephanopoulos is apologizing after being caught on camera making a remark to a pedestrian about President Joe Biden running for another term in the White House.
According to a video obtained by TMZ, the media personality for ABC News was asked by a passerby while walking in New York City, in workout clothes, on Tuesday, “Do you think Biden should step down? You’ve talked to him more than anybody else has lately.” Stephanopoulos responded, “I don’t think he can serve four more years.”
After his comment made headlines, the Good Morning America co-host said in a statement obtained by NBC News, “Earlier today I responded to a question from a passerby. I shouldn’t have.” The Disney-owned news network also added in its own statement, “George expressed his own point of view and not the position of ABC News.”
Stephanopoulos’ comment came days after he and ABC News scored the first, exclusive interview with the president following his disastrous debate performance with Donald Trump at the end of June.
Throughout the 22-minute, unedited sit-down, which aired on Friday, Stephanopoulos repeatedly hammered Biden with questions on his mental state and whether he is fit for another four years in the White House. The president insisted he just had a “bad night” in response to a question about the debate in Atlanta, adding, “I was exhausted. I didn’t listen to my instincts in terms of preparing.”
Since the debate, there have been many calls within Hollywood for Biden to step down as the Democratic presidential nominee, however, he has continuously said he’s staying in the fight for reelection in November.
Stephanopoulos is also a former White House communications adviser, working for former President Bill Clinton.
