The Kansas City Royals avoided a three-game road series sweep against the Colorado Rockies with a 10-1 victory on Sunday afternoon.
This certainly wasn’t a game with offense spread across all nine innings, as nearly half of the Royals’ runs took place early in the second frame.
How it Happened (most recent at the top):
Top Ninth: After Garcia and pinch hitter Hunter Renfroe were both walked with one out, Witt proceeded to launch a three-run, 386-foot homer to left. Royals 10, Rockies 1.
Bottom Eighth: Royals reliever Angel Zerpa has questionable start to day after hitting his first batter, but that would be the only damage as two groundouts and a strikeout ended the inning.
Top Eighth: Kansas City’s batters handled Rockies reliever Justin Lawrence, as Massey and Fermin were each able to add a run after a single and sacrifice fly respectively. Witt and Pasquantino singled earlier in the frame. Royals 7, Rockies 1.
Bottom Seventh: Singer started to decline a bit in the seventh inning after allowing three singles, including a two-out RBI by left fielder Nolan Jones for the Rockies first run. Nevertheless, he did throw two strikeouts in the frame. Royals 5, Rockies 1.
Top Seventh: Gordon’s debut ended one out into the seventh inning after Melendez hit a 385-foot solo shot to center to increase the lead. Royals 5, Rockies 0.
Bottom Sixth: Singer achieves a quality start after a 1-2-3 frame, which included his fifth strikeout of the afternoon.
Top Sixth: Perez breaks Kansas City’s dry spell with a two-out single, but Massey flew out to center for the third out.
Bottom Fifth: Singer walks Toglia for the second time to open the inning but that would be all as left fielder Nolan Jones grounded into a double play to shortstop and Schunk flew out to center.
Top Fifth: Gordon retires the first three batters of the frame for the second consecutive inning, after Garcia lined out, Isbel grounded out and Frazier flew out.
Bottom Fourth: Colorado gets runners on the corners with one out once again after third baseman Ryan McMahon and right fielder Jake Cave each single, but catcher Jacob Stallings grounded into a double play to keep the score as it is.
Top Fourth: Gordon creates two ground outs while tallying his third strikeout of the afternoon in a 1-2-3 frame.
Bottom Third: Singer allows his first Rocky to reach first base after walking first baseman Michael Toglia, and after a sacrifice fly, Colorado second baseman Aaron Schunk recorded a single to put runners on the corners. Nevertheless, Singer remained composed and struck-out the next two batters, leaving Toglia and Schunk stranded.
Top Third: Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. reached first on an infield single to third base to open the inning, but Pasquantino took him off base after lining into a double play. Perez then proceeded to line out to shortstop.
Bottom Second: Singer fortunately doesn’t replicate Gordon this time as two groundouts and a fly out made for a quick frame.
Top Second: Royals first baseman Salvador Perez gets Kansas City’s bats going and second baseman Michael Massey and catcher Freddy Fermin immediately follow it up with two no-out singles of their own to give the Royals the game’s first run. The fun most certainly didn’t stop there though, as after left fielder MJ Melendez flew out, third baseman Maikel Garcia followed it with a three-run 382-foot homer to center. Gordon got out of the inning after center fielder Kyle Isbel lined out and leadoff hitter Adam Frazier flew out. Royals 4, Rockies 0.
Bottom First: Royals pitcher Brady Singer perfectly replicates Gordon’s start with two strikeouts and a groundout of his own.
Top First: Rockies pitcher Tanner Gordon couldn’t have started his Major League debut much better as he struck-out two of his first three batters while Royals designated hitter Vinnie Pasquantino closed the top of the first frame with a groundout.
