In a recent column, a former NFL scout compared Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders to a frustrating New York Jets draft bust. Sanders is expected to be taken in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft after having a stellar 2023 season at Colorado.

Sanders went 298/430 passing for 3,230 yards, 27 touchdowns, and three interceptions. Those figures have college analysts hyped about what he can achieve this season. He’s one of the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy this year.
Former NFL scout Daniel Jeremiah wrote a scouting report on Sanders on the NFL‘s website. Jeremiah likes Sanders’s touchdown-to-interception ratio but thinks he takes too many sacks. While Colorado’s offensive line was awful last season, Sanders sometimes held on to the ball too long, trying to force a play.

Jeremiah’s review of Sanders was positive. He believes Sanders will be a starter at the NFL level. However, Jeremiah made an odd comparison for Sanders, saying the Colorado star reminds him of Geno Smith:
Like Smith during his time with the Mountaineers, Sanders plays in a wide-open college offense that showcases his polish as a passer. Both Smith and Sanders have beautiful throwing motions and deliver a firm/catchable ball. While each is capable of taking the free yards presented in the run game, neither is dynamic as a ball-carrier.
Following a long, rocky start to this NFL career, Smith blossomed into a Pro Bowl quarterback. I see similar upside in Sanders. As my Move The Sticks Podcast partner Bucky Brooks would say, both of these signal-callers are more shooters than scorers. They are point guards who play really well within the confines of the play call; they aren’t unscripted, creative playmaker types. It’ll be important for Sanders’ NFL team to realize how to best utilize his skill set.
A subtle warning about drafting Sanders?Nov 17, 2023; Pullman, Washington, USA; Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders (2) looks to the sideline during a game against the Washington State Cougars in the first half at Gesa Field at Martin Stadium. Smith was a bust for the Jets. The 2013 second-round pick played four seasons for the Jets before they gave up on him. He started in 30 games for the Jets, going 501/866 passing for 5,962 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 36 interceptions.
Smith performed poorly during his stops with the New York Giants and Los Angeles Chargers. However, he turned his career around with the Seattle Seahawks in 2022 when he took over the starting job after Russell Wilson was traded to the Denver Broncos.
Jeremiah’s comparison is optimistic but has a slight warning for the NFL teams. Sanders has a unique skill set, and it could take luck to make the situation work.
