Following the opening of the 2026 contact recruiting period, the Wisconsin football staff stayed in-state for one talented defender.
Mason Black, a 2026 defensive end from Waukesha, has become a recruiting target for the Wisconsin football staff after a successful past season. Black is a dynamic defensive end with a great combination between his size and his game-changing speed. During a recent interview with Wisconsin Sports Heroics, Black broke down his recruitment and his potential interest in playing for the Badgers.

After the opening of the 2026 contact recruiting period, the Wisconsin football staff quickly started to contact defensive end Mason Black. Black, a Waukesha native, has grown up watching the Wisconsin football team playing. As a Wisconsin native, Black was asked about what the Badgers contacting him means, and Black stated, “I like Wisconsin and their culture but not knowing how I would fit yet as I feel I’m a versatile player.”
Since it is still very early for the recruit, Black stated he is “…very open to other programs.” Currently, Black has been in close contact with Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Purdue early on.
Black is not your traditional defensive end, between his vast traveling to start his recruitment, to his play style on the field. The big defensive end comes in at 6-feet-5-inches, and holds an incredible burst of speed off the line that allows him to sneak into the backfield often.

For Black, perhaps the biggest key in his recruitment is understanding the culture that a program can provide him with. When asked about keys to his recruitment, Black stated, “I’m looking for a very cultural team, stuff I’ve seen especially at Minnesota and Iowa State, the coaches are very connected to their players with great relationships.”
Developing a relationship and maintaining one with the staff is important for Black as he searches for his future home. The recruit wants to attend a program that is equally as determined and eager for success as Black is himself. The defensive end stated, “I also want player accountability, and just like everyone else all I want to do is play at the level after that and be as good as I can get.”
When the defensive end stated he wants to play at the “level after that”, he truly meant that he is setting his sights on the NFL. In order to reach the highest league of them all, you need the right people in your corner, and that is exactly what Black is looking for at the collegiate level.

For the Wisconsin football staff, the ultimate key in landing Black as mentioned is breaking down the culture of the program to the recruit. Black wants to attend a school that demands a certain level of success both on and off the field, and he is open to traveling in order to do so.
If the Wisconsin football staff wants to keep Black in Wisconsin, the key will be showing the recruit the vast history of the program. The Badgers expect a certain level of effort out of everyone involved with the program, and there have been no exceptions. Wisconsin runs a tight, successful ship under their current staff, which could be just what Black is looking for.
