During a recruiting trip a few weeks ago, Wisconsin football Head Coach Luke Fickell met with an eager 2026 recruit.
Carter Buck, a 2026 edge rusher from Texas, has been a defensive target for the Wisconsin football staff since before the opening of the recruiting period. Wisconsin loves the size and play-style that Buck offers, and so have other teams such as Tulsa and North Texas. During a recent interview with Wisconsin Sports Heroics, Buck broke down the major factors in his recruitment as well as what it was like to meet Coach Fickell.

While the 2026 recruiting period brings plenty of attention to recruits, before the period also involves valuable recruiting experiences. 2026 edge rusher Carter Buck has gained massive attention recently between his size and success on the field, as well as the success of his teammate and USC commitment Gus Cordova. Buck believes he receives extra attention from coaches who are often watching Cordova play on the field.
Whether Cordova has unknowingly helped Buck or not, the edge rusher has a certain set of skills that have truly set him apart. Firstly, Buck enters the field with a massive 6-foot-6-inch frame that extends his reach and tackling range. Secondly, Buck is a high-motor player that is consistently working to make something happen even when the play has moved away from him.
While many schools have not contacted Buck personally yet, the recruit has received plenty of attention through his high school coach. A few weeks ago, Buck had the chance to meet Coach Fickell for the first time and experience Madison through a Virtual Reality headset.

For Buck, perhaps the biggest key to his recruitment involves the location that he will eventually land in. When asked about programs he displays interest in, Buck responded, “I’m interested in Texas A&M because I am not too far from there and would love to stay close to home or have family around.”
Buck continued to state, “I’m also interested in Wisconsin because I have family near Minneapolis who have a cabin on a lake in Wisconsin.”
Staying close to family is key for Buck, and luring him to Madison is going to take plenty of convincing given the distance. However, Buck stated he is focused on “…looking for someplace that I could get playing time the soonest, and also looking for a college with good academics.”

The key to landing Buck for the Wisconsin football staff is going to involve keeping a close relationship with the recruit. Perhaps the biggest aspect of his recruitment is staying near family, and while Buck has family in Wisconsin, having a staff that acts as family would be an even bigger deal. Buck takes relationships and connections with staff members seriously, and if there is not that contact he is looking for, Buck will likely look elsewhere.
