The crowing among Longhorn fans when the Jim Schlossnagle move became official was that this dealt a death blow to the Texas A&M baseball program. First the coach, then the assistants, then, soon after, all the players would be headed to Austin.
Well, they did get the coach. We now know that they only got some of the assistants, and it is increasingly seeming like they will be getting none of the players. What was supposed to be a total coup is now looking more and more like the rebuilding job it was always going to be down in Austin.
Of course, with the portal, you can rebuild quickly. However, the portal runs both ways. If the former Aggie staff was counting on bringing some big names with them to their new abode in Austin, they’re now behind the eight-ball a bit, with a more-than-likely disgruntled current roster to sate. They’ll have to do that without one of the most magnetic personalities and best recruiters they boasted on staff, as Earley is now headed back to Aggieland.
Complicating things further for the Longhorns is that, rather than Texas poaching from A&M, it is now an imminent danger that the Aggies steal from the Horns’ roster. Earley is reportedly bringing along Caleb Longley, a top recruiter and hitting coach from the last Texas staff, with him to College Station.
I would expect former @TexasBaseball assistant Caleb Longley to end up on Michael Earley’s staff at @AggieBaseball. Another spot is expected to be a Power 5 head coach.

For all the flaws that Texas had last year on the diamond, talent and hitting were two of their strongest suits, so this is a savvy hire by the new head man for the Aggies. The Horns already have at least one impact player in the portal in Dee Kennedy, and there’s plenty of talent left for the Aggies to target, such as Max Belyeu.
This could turn into an all-time epic reversal of fortunes from just a few days ago if Earley is able to move quickly here. We’ll continue to follow this closely.
