Louisiana Tech used a strong start to the third quarter to defeat UTEP, 68-65, on Monday night in a Conference USA women’s basketball matchup in Ruston, Louisiana.
The Miners trailed 30-25 at halftime, but the Lady Techsters used a 19-5 run to start the third quarter to go up 49-30.
UTEP made a late charge and cut the lead to five points in the final 30 seconds and then scored at the buzzer for the final margin.
UTEP falls to 13-9 overall and 5-7 in Conference USA. Louisiana Tech is 14-8 overall and 6-5 in league play.
The Lady Techsters finished the game 8 of 17 from 3-point range and 14 of 15 from the free throw line. The Miners missed 19 of 24 from 3-point range and were 24 of 62 from the field.
Nine players scored for Louisiana Tech led by Keiunna Walker’s 17 points. Anna Larr Roberson added 12 points for the Lady Techsters and Salma Bates scored 11. Louisiana Tech leads the all-time series, 15-8.
Destiny Thurman led the Miners with 19 points, Katia Gallegos scored 13, Elina Arike scored 12 and Avery Crouse added 11. Crouse and Arike both made 5 of 8 from the field and combined for 17 rebounds. Gallegos added five steals
Tight first half
Louisiana Tech led 15-12 after one quarter and 30-25 at halftime. The Miners tied it at 23 on a Crouse basket but the Lady Techsters finished the half on a 7-2 run for their five-point halftime lead.
Louisiana Tech made 12 of 27 from the field, including 5 of 10 from 3-point range. The Miners were 9 of 28 from the field and 3 of 11 from 3-point range, but outscored Louisiana Tech 4-1 at the free throw line.
Bates led the Lady Techsters with nine points. Thurman led the Miners with nine points, followed by Crouse and Gallegos with seven points each. The Miners outrebounded the Lady Techsters, 21-13, and were led in that category by Arike with six.

The Miners stay on the road and will play at Marshall at 11 a.m. Sunday. UTEP and Louisiana Tech are scheduled to meet next Thursday in El Paso.
