As of this year, the South Dakota Native Tourism Alliance has transformed into a nonprofit organization, ushering in an exciting new phase five years after its inception by the state’s nine Indigenous tribes alongside many other organizations. The alliance aims to bolster entrepreneurship in economically challenged areas while celebrating and preserving Indigenous culture.
Tourism holds the distinction of being South Dakota’s second-largest industry, driving significant economic growth in various towns across the state. There’s a compelling mission to connect millions of visitors and their substantial expenditures with the rich tapestry of Native American heritage found here.
Tapping into Tourism Gold
Tamara St. John, an archivist for Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Tribe, views tourism as a golden opportunity for communities situated just off major highways. “When you have unique destinations that attract visitors right off interstates, it’s like uncovering tourism gold,” she asserts.
Located in Agency Village at Roberts County, the Tribal Historic Preservation Office houses a growing collection featuring hundreds of historical artifacts and Indigenous artwork. Currently stored within tribal administrative buildings on Lake Traverse Reservation due to space constraints, plans are underway for developing a visitor center dedicated to showcasing this valuable collection more effectively.
St. John reflects on her belief that tourism is not just an economic opportunity—it represents sovereignty for tribes aiming to tell their own stories through curated experiences shared with locals and international tourists alike.
