FORT PIERRE, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – On Thursday evening, the 2025 South Dakota Teacher of the Year was announced during a special recognition banquet in Fort Pierre.
Secretary of Education Joseph Graves announced that Amy Verhelst, a kindergarten teacher at Sioux Valley Elementary School in Volga, was selected from five regional finalists.
Verhelst is a graduate of South Dakota State University and has been teaching since 2014. She has also instructed in the Brandon Valley School District and in Indiana.
Verhelst received a $5,000 grant from the West River Foundation to use as she wishes, and a $2,000 honorarium from the South Dakota Board of Regents.
She will also have the opportunity to earn a master’s degree at no cost from the South Dakota Board of Regents.
Next spring, Verhelst will represent South Dakota as a candidate for the 2025 National Teacher of the Year award in Washington, DC.
