HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A Chesterfield County man who last week wounded a McBee police officer before engaging authorities in a roadside standoff died by suicide.

Lee County Coroner Larry Logan told News13 Wednesday night that Alston Modlin, 27, shot himself in the head.

The incident started as a traffic stop around 11 a.m. Thursday morning near McBee High School. Modlin then took off before his vehicle was located on Una Road near the Lee and Darlington county lines.

Authorities asked the Horry County Police Department to participate in their investigation, and the agency had the scene cleared by Saturday morning, spokeswoman Mikalya Moskov said.

A Lee County sheriff’s deputy was shot and K9 officer Mikka was killed during the standoff.

“I want to thank Horry County for taking the lead in investigating this incident, and all of our partners for their support and assistance. There’s been so much community support from near and far, and each person and agency that has reached out to check on us and offered their prayers is appreciated,” Lee County Sheriff Daniel Simon said in a statement.
