South Dakota high school football predictions Week 5No. 4 Jefferson vs No. 5 O’Gorman
Jefferson 28, O’Gorman 7: The matchup between Jefferson and O’Gorman tops our list of local games. The Knights and the Cavaliers are each coming off firsts in Week 4: O’Gorman earned its first win of the season against Rapid City Central while Jefferson suffered its first defeat to Lincoln.
After scoring only 19 points through three weeks, The Knights exploded offensively against the Cobblers, scoring 46. It remains to be seen whether O’Gorman’s offensive outburst was a sign of things to come or a one-off but that’s something to watch for in this game. The Cavaliers scored a season-low 16 points against the Patriots but could see themselves returning to form on offense against the Knights.
No. 2 Lennox vs No. 4 Dakota Valley
Lennox 21, Dakota Valley 14: The Orioles are coming off an impressive 40-28 win over West Central. After the win, Lennox moved up to the number two spot in the latest South Dakota Prep football media poll.
The Panthers have won three of their first four games, defeating the reigning state champions Dell Rapids, Lakota Tech, and Tri-Valley. Their lone loss of the season came against one of the top teams in 11A in Canton, who’d previously been ranked first.
Lennox’s lone loss of the season came against one of the top teams in the class, Sioux Falls Christian, but the Orioles were competitive in that matchup, falling 19-8. This will be another big test for them but we predict they’ll come out on top.
No. 3 Canton vs West Central
Canton 35, West Central 21: Both Canton and West Central are looking to bounce back from a Week 4 loss against top competition. The Trojans were defeated by Lennox in a high-scoring affair while the C-Hawks fell to Sioux Falls Christian pretty convincingly, 49-7.
West Central has had difficulties defending against top teams thus far. The Trojans allowed 40-plus points against both Sioux Falls Christian and Lennox in Week 1 and 4. Canton will provide another difficult test for their defense.
No. 2 Lincoln vs Washington
Lincoln 42, Washington 7: The Warriors are coming off their first win of the season, defeating Rapid City Stevens, 35-7. Washington has had a difficult start to the season after losing Dveyoun Bonwell-Witte, one of the top prospects in the state, to injury but senior quarterback Thomas Hoffman has done his best to keep his side competitive.
The Patriots have been flying to open the 2024 season. They’re still unbeaten and are coming off their most impressive win of the year thus far, knocking off Jefferson, 28-16. Lincoln was strong on both sides of the ball against the Cavaliers, exploding for four rushing touchdowns on offense and limiting Jefferson’s run game to 120 yards on defense.
The Patriots should remain unbeaten through Week 5.
No. 2 Brookings vs Roosevelt
Brookings 21, Roosevelt 14: Brookings vs Roosevelt should prove to be an interesting interclass matchup.
The two teams are on opposite sides of their respective classes, with the Bobcats still unbeaten and holding significant wins over Pierre and Aberdeen Central while the Rough Riders are 1-3 with their only win coming against Rapid City Central. Interclass games are always more difficult to predict but we’ll give the nod to Brookings because of their current form.
No. 1 Harrisburg vs Rapid City Stevens
Harrisburg 49, Rapid City Stevens 7: The Tigers have looked unbeatable through their first four games, knocking off their opponents by a combined 117 points. This week they’ll take on the Raiders, who are still searching for their first win after dropping games to Lincoln, Brandon Valley, Washington and Sturgis Brown.
Those Sioux Falls area teams all beat Rapid City Stevens by more than 20 points and Harrisburg should be able to do the same.
No. 1 Sioux Falls Christian vs Madison
Sioux Falls Christian 49, Madison 14: The Chargers are coming off their biggest win of the season, knocking off former No. 1 Canton, 49-7, in a game that showed that Sioux Falls Christian is undoubtedly the top team in 11A.
The Bulldogs are 3-1 but those three wins have come against unranked teams and their lone loss came against the reigning state champion Dell Rapids. Sioux Falls Christian has already faced arguably the toughest teams in the class and emerged unscathed. Both their offense and defense have been firing on all cylinders to start the season. The Chargers should dominate this matchup.
No. 3 Brandon Valley vs Rapid City Central
Brandon Valley 42, Rapid City Central 7: The Lynx have dominated every opponent they’ve faced through four weeks and are a perfect 4-0. On the other hand, Rapid City Central is still searching for its first win of the season. The Cobblers have been close a couple times, battling Roosevelt to a 21-19 scoreline and coming up just short against Spearfish, 26-22.
On defense, Brandon Valley hasn’t allowed more than a touchdown in a game this season and has scored over 40 points twice. Their first 40-point game came against Rapid City Stevens.
Tea vs Mitchell
Tea 42, Mitchell 7: Since winning their first game against Douglas, the Kernels have gone 0-3, being held scoreless in two of their losses. The Titans, meanwhile, have won every game by a pretty wide margin since their opening-week loss against Spearfish. Tea is losing starting quarterback Brenner Konrad to an ACL injury but the Titans should still have more than enough to get by Mitchell this week.
