How Nevada, Washoe County voted in presidential elections since 1980

Nevada is often called a battleground state because races tend to be close and its voters don’t reliably pick the candidate of one party as evidenced by its Republican governor and two Democratic U.S. senators.

That perception may be misplaced in presidential contests. Results from the past four elections for the White House show the state voting blue.

Since Barack Obama first won in 2008, a Republican presidential candidate has not prevailed in Nevada.

There’s some evidence this could change. Republicans have added about 31,000 registered voters to their ranks since President Joe Biden’s win four years ago while Democrats have lost about 31,000 registered voters.

And former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are polling neck-and-neck in Nevada.

Nevada currently has six electoral votes to win toward 270 for a presidential candidate to claim victory.

How Washoe County voted in every presidential election since 1980

While Nevada’s rural counties consistently and strongly vote Republican, the state’s most populous county – Clark, home to Las Vegas – votes heavily Democratic.

Nevada’s second biggest county – Washoe, home to Reno – is more closely split politically. This explains why Washoe County gets an outsized number of visits from presidential candidates.

Here’s how the county has voted since 1980 when Republican Ronald Reagan won in a landslide by 40 percentage points.

2020: Democrat Joe Biden beat Republican Donald Trump by 11,368 votes in Washoe County, a 4.5 percentage point margin of victory.2016: Democrat Hillary Clinton beat Republican Donald Trump by 2,621 votes, a 1.3 percentage point margin of victory.2012: Democrat Barack Obama beat Republican Mitt Romney by 6,956 votes, a 3.7 percentage point margin of victory.2008: Democrat Barack Obama beat Republican John McCain by 22,791 votes, a 12.6 percentage point margin of victory.2004: Republican George W. Bush beat Democrat John Kerry by 6,704 votes, a 4.2 percentage point margin of victory.2000: Republican George W. Bush beat Democrat Al Gore by 11,543 votes, a 9.4 percentage point margin of victory.1996: Republican Bob Dole beat Democrat Bill Clinton by 4,562 votes, a 4.2 percentage point margin of victory.1992: Republican George H.W. Bush beat Democrat Bill Clinton by 3,136 votes, a 2.7 percentage point margin of victory.1988: Republican George H.W. Bush beat Democrat Michael Dukakis by 19,752 votes, a 22 percentage point margin of victory.1984: Republican Ronald Reagan beat Democrat Walter Mondale by 28,097 votes, a 38 percentage point margin of victory.1980: Republican Ronald Reagan beat Democrat Jimmy Carter by 25,408 votes, a 40 percentage point margin of victory. How Nevada voted in every presidential election since 1980

Since 1980, Nevada has voted for the person who won the White House in 10 out of the past 11 races, being out of step only in 2016 when the state’s top vote-getter was Hillary Clinton.

Overall, the state tends to lean more Democratic than Washoe County, in part because of strong union organizations in Las Vegas and the state becoming demographically more diverse as its population has grown.

Here’s who won Nevada’s electoral votes since 1980:

2020: Democrat Joe Biden beat Republican Donald Trump by 33,596 votes in Nevada, a 2.4 percentage point margin of victory.2016: Democrat Hillary Clinton beat Republican Donald Trump by 27,202 votes, a 2.4 percentage point margin of victory.2012: Democrat Barack Obama beat Republican Mitt Romney by 67,806 votes, a 6.7 percentage point margin of victory.2008: Democrat Barack Obama beat Republican John McCain by 120,909 votes, a 12.5 percentage point margin of victory.2004: Republican George W.
