U.S. Gulf Coast bracing for hurricane impact this week

A major hurricane is set to impact the U.S. Gulf Coast later this week as it tracks northward from the Caribbean Sea to the Gulf of Mexico. It’s expected to make landfall this Thursday, Sept. 26.

Hurricane Helene, a storm set to wreak havoc on the southern U.S. this week, may do Ohio a favor by the time the storm dissipates across the Midwest.

Helene is slowly headed toward the U.S., strengthening as it nears Northwest Florida. By the time it makes landfall, it could strengthen into a Category 3 hurricane with winds of up to 126 mph, USA TODAY previously reported.

The National Hurricane Center predicts the storm will curve through Alabama and Georgia before weakening to a tropical depression and losing energy over Tennessee and Kentucky Friday night and early Saturday.

NWS Wilmington meteorologist James Gibson said that the storm’s impacts might reach into Ohio, bringing 35 mph winds and one to two inches of rain to the parched state.

“It’s going to lessen the drought. It’s not going to fix the drought, but obviously, we need the rain,” Gibson said.

Even if the storm changes directions or crosses into Ohio directly, its effects on the Buckeye state will likely remain similar to the forecasted wind speeds and rain levels, Gibson said.

The storm will also bring a 5 to 15 percent chance of flash flooding to southwestern Ohio, according to the National Hurricane Center.
