Eli Drinkwitz talks up current success of Missouri, Chiefs

Missouri is off to a 4-0 start for the second consecutive season for the first time since joining the SEC. The Tigers are No. 11 in the country, and, according to ESPN, they returned 73% of their production from last year, during which they won 11 games while recording their first-ever New Year’s Six bowl victory.

Head coach Eli Drinkwitz, the 2023 SEC Coach of the Year, joined “The Paul Finebaum Show” Wednesday and discussed his program’s recent breakthrough.

“Well, I think we’re achieving what we had always dreamed of achieving,” Drinkwitz said. “There’s still a lot of work laid out in front of us. But I think it’s a moment to say, ‘Hey, we can accomplish what we believed we could accomplish by coming to school here,’ whether it was the dream that we sold to [wide receiver] Luther Burden or the vision that I had when we took this job, or the vision that I’ve sold to the staff and to the administration on investing in us and the reasons why to invest.

“So I think it’s a proud moment in time for the state of Missouri. You’ve got great football at the college level, and then you’ve got great football at the NFL level, so for the 6.5 million residents of the state of Missouri, I think they can all get behind both us and the Chiefs right now. And that’s an awesome thing.”

The Kansas City Chiefs are in the middle of an NFL dynasty at the moment. Patrick Mahomes has quarterbacked them to three Super Bowl wins in the last five years, including back-to-back titles. Already 3-0 this season, Andy Reid and his Chiefs are well on their way to another impressive, and potentially historic, campaign.

Missouri, meanwhile, is looking to remain undefeated in 2024 as well. The Tigers are off this week while the SEC centers around a massive top-five showdown between No. 2 Georgia and No. 4 Alabama.

When Drinwiktz and Co. return to action, they’ll get No. 24 Texas A&M, the first of three road games in a four-week span for the Tigers.
