Two Louisiana restaurants are getting national recognition Tuesday after being named as 50 of the best restaurants in the country this year by the New York Times.
Zeeland Street in Baton Rouge and the newly opened Acamaya in New Orleans were chosen by NYT reporters and editors after 12 months of scouting out the best representatives for good eats across the nation.
Zeeland Street is a spot known for its breakfast options and plate lunches. Owner Stephanie Phares opened the restaurant in 1992 with a passion for feeding her community.
Phares told The Advocate she was feeling good even after completing four hours of chemotherapy and radiation the day before the list came out.
Chef Phares’ Zeeland menu includes pecan smoked brisket, blueberry pancakes, pot roast and po-boys.
Acamaya is a new restaurant in the Bywater neighborhood in New Orleans, owned by sisters Lydia and chef Ana Castro. The Mexican restaurant is reminiscent of what you would find in Mexico City, as Ian McNulty describes.
Chef Castro is no stranger to receiving national accolades. Castro was named “Best New Chef” by Food + Wine in 2022 while running Lengua Madre, which served a chef’s tasting menu of modern Mexican cuisine.
