Tropical Storm Helene is intensifying as it barrels toward Florida’s Gulf Coast, expected to reach hurricane status and predicted to make landfall Thursday night. It’s also likely to impact Louisville and Kentucky.
The weather system expected to make its way through the Ohio Valley follows a tornado warning Tuesday in Jefferson County and Southern Indiana as well as scattered showers and storms. National Weather Service meteorologist Tom Reaugh said the office is currently surveying areas in Clark County after a cold front moved through the area, causing storms on Tuesday and “isolated incidents of wind damage and a few reports of hail.”
Here’s what we know about its impact in Louisville and what’s to come as a result of Helene in the following days.

Tropical Storm Helene intensifies, hurricane predicted
Raugh said the National Hurricane Center recorded winds of 70 mph Tuesday night as the system traveled toward the island of Cozumel off Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, dumping heavy rain and triggering possible mudslides across western Cuba while passing between the island and the Yucatan. According to USA TODAY Tropical Storm Helene also resulted in storm surge and hurricane warnings along Florida’s Gulf Coast.
The National Hurricane Center predicts winds of up to 120 mph as the system moves north and veers toward Florida’s Gulf Coast and Big Bend, struck by Hurricane Debby seven weeks ago.
Remnants of Tropical Storm Helene expected in Kentucky regions
Remnants of Tropical Storm Helene will likely bring “widespread rain and gusty winds” to Louisville and surrounding areas, according to the NWS. Raugh said 2-4 inches of rain are possible through Sunday night, with wind gusts of up to 35 mph. Friday is expected to see widespread moderate to heavy rain as Helene moves through the Ohio Valley.
“We’re thinking right now that the river should be able to handle that amount of rain okay without many flooding issues, however, these tropical systems can bring pretty intense local downpours,” Raugh said.
