The New York Times has just released their fourth annual restaurant list, and one Connecticut location made the cut.

This list compiles 50 of the best dining locations across the country, which the Times calls their “50 favorite places” to eat in America for the year. Out of the 50, four are in New England, with one each in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

While Ore Hill in Kent represented Connecticut on last year’s restaurant list, for 2024, the Times chose The Shipwright’s Daughter.

Located in historic Mystic, The Shipwright’s Daughter is a seafood restaurant serving up the best flavors the New England coast has to offer, with favorite dishes including seared scallops and roasted seacoast mushrooms.

What makes this seafood joint unique from all the others in New England? Sustainability. The Shipwright’s Daughter is committed to a sustainable mission, which it acts out through prioritizing the environment in its practices and using locally-sourced food. Self-labeled as a “tide to table” restaurant, The Shipwright’s Daughter supports the community by using only fresh New England ingredients from local growers, farmers and fishermen.

Although it only opened in 2020, the restaurant is no stranger to winning awards for their sustainability, seafood and excellent wine list. Recently, chef David Standridge won the James Beard award for best chef in the Northeast, a prestigious award given to chefs who demonstrate excellency in culinary skills and give back to their community.

When it comes to the restaurant, writer Patrick Farrell recommended almost the whole menu in the New York Times list.

He praised the roasted oysters as “velvety” and recommended the “delicate batter-fried fillet of whiting.”

He also said people should check out more than just the seafood, bringing attention to the “inventive pastas built around the produce of the moment, an exemplary roast chicken and the crispy pig’s head, a voluptuous take on tête de veau that should become a tourist attraction in itself.”
