During the middle of SEC play this coming basketball season, the Texas women will test themselves against a team from the Big Ten.
Texas announced on Tuesday that the Longhorns will play Maryland in the annual Coretta Scott King Classic on Jan. 20 at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. The event, which will be held on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, also features a game between Baylor and UCLA.
“We here at The University of Texas are both excited and honored to take part in this event,” Texas head coach Vic Schaefer said in a statement. “Knowing the impact that Martin Luther King, Jr. has had on our country and in the world, and to be part of an event named after his wife on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is an honor for us here at The University of Texas. We are excited about the opportunity to play Maryland, a well-coached and outstanding basketball team. We look forward to the opportunity.”
Maryland holds a 4-2 lead in the all-time series with Texas, but the Longhorns laughed last with their win over the Terrapins in the Sweet 16 round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament. Both Texas and Maryland reached the NCAA Tournament last season.
This time around, Texas will have played five SEC games by the time it meets up with Maryland, which will be seven games into its Big Ten schedule. Three days after its appearance in New Jersey, Texas will host Tennessee at Moody Center.
Even though the 2024-25 season will tip off in November, Texas still has not yet revealed its entire schedule. The Longhorns will participate in the 2024 Gulf Coast Showcase from Nov. 29-Dec. 1 and travel to Notre Dame on Dec. 5 as part of the SEC-ACC Challenge.
