PETERSBURG — Gratitude is my word of the day. On September 18, I attended a school board meeting where the Board of the Petersburg City Public Schools presented me with the gift of pride, a Virginia School Boards Association [VSBA] 2024 Media Honor Roll certificate and a Petersburg City Public Schools resolution.
Twelve days earlier, I received an invite to be recognized in person. On the days leading up to the special moment, I had more pep in my step. Kudos are rare these days. My heart embraced the praise and honor.
I arrived early and chatted with LaVerle Talley, Lending Helping Hands founder and executive director. Those in attendance waited patiently for the work session meeting to begin. My co-worker Bill Atkinson, watching the live feed from home, sent me a text, “I see you all styling … on the front row.” That cracked me up! He must have caught me pulling my long hair forward on both sides.
After the roll call, call to order, agenda approval, moment of silence and Pledge of Allegiance, the big moment arrived. Kenneth L. Pritchett, Petersburg’s School Board chair, read both documents aloud.
Full of gratitude, Kristi K. Higgins, a multimedia journalist/columnist in the USA TODAY Network, takes a selfie on September 18, 2024.

Petersburg City Public Schools resolution: 2024 VSBA Media Honor Roll
WHEREAS, in each community, the public schools are shaped by the community to provide the most appropriate and effective education for the children who attend those schools; and
WHEREAS, public schools are dependent on the community’s support in countless ways, including support in setting goals for the education of our children, in establishing successful volunteer and booster programs at the schools, for annual funding of operations, in periodic bond elections, in the election of qualified school board members; and
WHEREAS, much of the community’s knowledge and opinions about the public schools rely on responsible reporting by local media representatives who decide which news to share with the community, how much attention will be focused on various issues, and what the tone of the reporting will be;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that by a unanimous vote, the Petersburg School Board place the name of Kristi K. Higgins of The Progress-Index on the statewide VSBA Media Honor Roll, calling attention to the ongoing responsible and exemplary nature of reporting on this community’s public schools. The board members took a moment out of their valuable time to strike a pose with this Social Butterfly who fluttered inside with thankfulness. LaVerle was sweet and captured the moment with her iPhone lens. I have been with The Progress-Index since December 3, 2018. We have a small team, but we’re pretty mighty!
Later this year, VSBA will publish the 2024 Media Honor Roll in the VSBA Newsletter to recognize individuals honored across Virginia through this program.
