Penn State moves up one spot in USA TODAY’s 1-134 updated power rankings

Penn State is coming off an impressive victory over Kent State, where they held the Golden Flashes to a goose egg on the scoreboard. The win didn’t reward the Nittany Lions with much movement in the national polls; Penn State still ranks No. 8 in the latest US LBM Coaches Poll but did move up to No. 9 in the updated AP Poll.

Paul Myerberg’s weekly 1-134 power rankings were updated today, with Penn State moving up one spot to No. 7. The Nittany Lions flipped places with Big Ten foe Oregon, who was off this week and are now the second-highest-ranked Big Ten squad behind Ohio State (3rd). The top three remain the same, but Tennessee (4th) and Alabama (5th) switched positions after the Volunteers big win over Oklahoma.

Michigan moved up 11 spots after beating USC at home, while the Trojans fell to No. 21. Illinois is one of the week’s biggest risers, moving up 35 spots to No. 33 after beating Nebraska in Lincoln.

Penn State will welcome the Fighting Illini this weekend in what should be an exciting matchup between two ranked programs. A win this weekend could see Penn State vault into Myerberg’s top five when he reshuffles his 1-134 rankings next week.
