Bowie Police sergeant on leave after firing shot that hit moving car on MD US-127

BOWIE, Md. (7News) — A 12-year veteran with the Bowie Police Department is on leave and an investigation is underway after the officer fired his gun, hitting a moving car on Maryland Route 127 on September 12, according to Police Chief Dwayne Preston.

In a statement released Monday, Chief Preston said Sergeant Robert Warrington was on patrol in the area of MD 197 and US 50 when he stopped to help with what he thought was a driver stranded on the left shoulder of Collington Road.

As Sgt. Warrington walked toward the vehicle, a man approached from the opposite side of the street across the median, according to the chief.

The chief said the man walked past Sgt. Warrington and headed toward the passenger side of the vehicle during a brief discussion.

Then Sgt. Warrington fired one round from his service weapon. His reason for doing so remains under investigation, according to Chief Preston. No one was injured, but a car driving by was hit.

Sgt. Warrington has since been put on paid administrative leave, the chief said.

According to the chief, the Prince George’s County Police Department Special Investigation Response Team (SIRT) is conducting an independent investigation that was initiated after the incident.

The findings of the investigation will be presented to the State’s Attorney’s Office.

The incident was captured on both the in-car camera and Sgt. Warrington’s body-worn camera. The police department will release the video once the independent investigation is done, the chief said.

Chief Preston said he will further discuss the incident during a monthly Community Matters meeting scheduled for Wednesday, September 25 at 6 p.m. Stream the meeting live HERE.
