Arizona election: When is the deadline to register to vote?

When does early voting begin in Arizona? Do you need to provide proof of citizenship to vote? The Briefing’s latest episode answers voting questions.

With the Oct. 7 registration deadline looming for all eligible Arizona voters, groups from across the political spectrum are in the final stretch, working to get people registered to vote and to help them come up with a plan to cast their ballot.

As of the primary election July 30, Republicans continued to hold an advantage with 1.45 million registered voters, according to the Arizona secretary of state. They’re followed closely by 1.4 million unaffiliated voters, and the state has 1.2 million registered Democrats.

Turning Point Action, which is closely affiliated to the campaign of former Republican president Donald Trump, is deploying 1,000 field organizers in battlegrounds like Arizona. Democratic-leaning groups like LUCHA, Chispa Arizona and Our Voice Our Vote formed a coalition to inform voters and pledged to knock on 3 million doors before Election Day.

A series of rulings and glitches could affect how some Arizonans are able to vote in the 2024 presidential election.

Sasha Hupka, The Republic’s election watchdog reporter, told The Briefing that two major developments called into question which ballots some Arizona voters may be able to use.

A U.S. Supreme Court decision ruled that Arizonans registering to vote without providing proof of citizenship could only use a federal form, and not the Arizona-specific form, which could be rejected. Arizona is the only state in the country that requires proof like a birth certificate or passport to register. There are about 42,000 “federal-only” voters who will only be able to vote in federal races, not local and state ones.

Last week, the Arizona secretary of state said a coding glitch in the state’s motor vehicle database miscategorized some 100,000 Arizona voters who may not have provided citizenship documents in accordance with state law. On Friday, the Arizona Supreme Court ruled those voters would be allowed to vote a full ballot in November.
