PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Crime in Arizona’s largest cities has decreased, mirroring a trend similar to nationwide numbers released Monday by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The data was collected using numbers reported by police departments nationwide for crimes in 2023.
Nationally, violent crime dropped an estimated 3% from 2022 to 2023, and homicides dropped nearly 12%.
In 2023, Phoenix Police reported 13,040 incidents of violent crime, which is 3.7% less than in 2022. Police reported 198 homicides in 2023, which is down 12.6% from the 223 homicides in the city the year before.
Recent downward trend, but still elevated
While the numbers are down from previous years, they remain elevated from where they were in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.
When comparing 2023 crime data to 2019 numbers in Phoenix, there is a 10% increase in overall violent crime and a 42% increase in homicides.
The city’s police department looks at the crime rate of total violent crimes per 1,000 people to account for population swings. Those figures show a decrease in the violent crime rate, but it is still estimated to be higher than pre-pandemic levels.
Trends in other Arizona cities
Other Arizona cities reported similar trends to the FBI, but a few did see increases in violent crimes. Of the cities listed, Flagstaff saw the largest decrease at -19.9%, and Peoria saw the largest increase with 8.8% more crimes.

The decrease in violent crime appears to be continuing, according to monthly reports posted by the Phoenix Police Department’s Crime Analysis and Research Unit.
The unit has posted monthly figures for major crimes in the city through August 2024. Their preliminary information shows a 17% decrease in homicides through the first eight months of 2024 compared to the same time period in 2023.
Total violent crime is up slightly (1%) compared to August 2023. Those numbers are still elevated compared to those at the same time in 2019.
