Second round of rain on the way to Michigan

rain

Our first round of rain has moved through Michigan. The second period of rain is southwest of Michigan and heading our way.

The rain yesterday brought many of us in Lower Michigan some useful moisture to help combat the recent dry spell.

You can see from my rainfall total map of yesterday’s rain not all of us had a good rain. The dark blue areas received at least one-half inch of rain yesterday. The dark green areas had an inch of rain. There was a decent rain in the center of the Thumb into the Flint area. Also some half inch to one inch rain fell from the Grand Rapids area into the far southwest border of Michigan. Over northern Lower Michigan and the Upper Peninsula you are probably wondering where all the rain fell.

The next wave of rain is in Missouri and southern Illinois as of midday on this Monday, and heading northeast. The area of rain will bring most of us a showery Tuesday. The latest data shows the heavy rainfall amounts will still be rather patchy, meaning some of us don’t get another meaningful amount of rain.

The radar forecast below shows the spotty nature of the rain. You can imagine that some of us will feel ripped off by Mother Nature once the rain is over. You also see Southeast Michigan and the Thumb getting into some nice rain.

Here’s what that same data shows for a total rainfall amount by the time we wake up Wednesday.

Like many warm season rains, the rain amounts can be streaky with heavy stretches and very light stretches.

The total rainfall forecast above shows the potential of up to 3 inches in some part of the Thumb. This is probably overdone somewhat, but it does show there could be some heavy amounts. Southeast Lower will likely have the most concentrated decent rain. Southwest Lower will also have helpful rain. Northwest Lower Michigan, including the Traverse City area, probably won’t have more than one-quarter inch of rain.

By the time we get to Wednesday morning southeast and southwest Michigan will have had two nice rains to help the dryness. Northern Lower Michigan will still be fairly dry. The Upper Peninsula won’t get much rain out of these two weather-makers, but the U.P. also isn’t as dry as Lower Michigan.

Depending on what the tropical system does in the Southeast, we may wait until next week for the next rain here in Michigan.
