Roland-Story (2-2) will attempt to bounce back from an overtime loss at 2A No. 6 Kuemper Catholic when it hosts Southeast Valley (2-2) for its homecoming game. In 8-player District 9, Collins-Maxwell (3-1) will host Glidden-Ralston (2-2) and Colo-NESCO (2-3) goes on the road to face Baxter (2-2).

Iowa high school football predictions Week 5Class 5A No. 2 West Des Moines Valley at Ames

Valley (3-1), Ames (1-3): Ames will be facing a top-five 5A team for the third time this season when Valley comes to town on Friday.

Valley features Iowa State recruit Zay Robinson at receiver (25 catches, 318 yards) and talented quarterback Drake DeGroote (767 yards and 10 touchdowns passing with no interceptions). The Tiger defense is led by senior safety Andrew Price (3.5 sacks) and junior defensive back Jayden McGregory (two interceptions).

Ames is coming off its first victory with a decisive 49-21 homecoming win over Des Moines Roosevelt. Little Cyclone quarterback Cameron Cantonwine threw for 439 yards and five touchdowns in the game, and receivers Jeffrey Roberts and Brennan Swanson combined to make 12 receptions for 364 yards and four touchdowns.

The Ames defense made big strides against Roosevelt, and they are going to need to take an even bigger step forward this week if the Little Cyclones are to be competitive. Look for Ames to make a couple big plays against Valley’s talented secondary, but in the end the Tigers simply have too much talent for the Little Cyclones to overcome. Valley 41, Ames 13

Class 4A No. 5 Gilbert at Des Moines Hoover

Gilbert (4-0), Hoover (0-4): Gilbert will be looking to secure its second winning season in a row against an overmatched Hoover team.

Tiger running back/linebacker and Iowa State verbal commit Will Hawthorne is having one of the best seasons of any player in the state. He leads 4A with 956 rushing yards and 15 total touchdowns on the season.

Gilbert also has a salty defense featuring four players with at least one interception, four with at least one fumble recovery and three with two sacks.

Hoover is led offensively by running back Diyon Barry (176 yards and two touchdowns rushing). JaVahcy Brooks (17 tackles) and Hushindi Abwe (16 tackles and 6.5 tackles for loss) lead the Huskies on defense.

Look for Gilbert to emerge from this game with a comfortable win. Gilbert 48, Hoover 0

Class 4A No. 10 Indianola at Ballard

Indianola (3-1), Ballard (2-2): This is a big opportunity for Ballard to show it can hang with the best in 4A.

The Bombers will need to be at the top of their game to hang with an Indianola team that took 4A No. 3 Pella down to the wire at Pella two weeks ago before falling by a 24-22 score. Linebacker Jackson Wacha leads 4A in both tackles (55) and sacks (10) as the anchor of a talented Ballard defense, and senior quarterback Mason Gatchel has thrown for 664 yards and four touchdowns.

Indianola quarterback Asher Brueck has 610 yards and seven touchdowns passing with just one interception, and Jake Pontier has 529 yards and seven touchdowns rushing for the Indians. The Indianola defense is led by A.J. Pontier with 28.5 tackles and Carson Slorah with two sacks.

Look for Wacha and the the Bomber defense to keep Ballard in the game. But Indianola will have just enough of an edge on offense to pull off the victory. Indianola 16, Ballard 13

Nevada at Perry

Nevada (3-1), Perry (2-2): Nevada regrouped from a rough loss at 2A No. 3 Prairie City-Monroe two weeks ago to handle Hampton-Dumont-CAL on homecoming night last Friday by a 41-21 score.

The Cubs plan on carrying the momentum from that victory over to their 3A District 6 opener against Perry. Quarterback Connor King has 650 yards and four touchdowns passing, running back Anthony Eaton 593 yards and nine touchdowns rushing and receiver Lucas Brown 12 catches for 207 yards and two touchdowns.

More: How a veteran offensive line helped Nevada hold off Roland-Story on Friday

Linebackers Jackson Burlage (34.5 tackles) and Austin Waldera (30 tackles) pace the Cubs on defense.

Perry is coming off a 32-7 loss to Storm Lake. Bluejay running back Geren Kenney has 277 yards and three touchdowns rushing and Jorge Ramirez has 17 tackles on defense.

Look for Nevada’s veteran offensive line to open up big holes for Eaton and for King to keep on a hot streak after throwing for 251 yards and four touchdowns against Hampton-Dumont-Cal. The Cub defense will also shine on Friday. Nevada 44, Perry 6

Southeast Valley at Roland-Story

Southeast Valley (2-2), Roland-Story (2-2): Homecoming comes at a great time for a Roland-Story team that is smarting after coming up just short of a big upset win over Kuemper Catholic to open 2A District 7 play.

The Norsemen had a lot to be proud of in a losing effort on Friday, and they will look to take out their frustrations from the loss in front of the home crowd on Friday. Sam Knoll has 399 yards passing, 151 rushing and 10 total touchdowns at quarterback and Luke Thoreson has emerged as a big-play weapon at receiver with seven catches for 153 yards.

Linebacker Charlie Watts and defensive back Cody Long lead the Roland-Story defense. Watts has 23 tackles and Long 16.5.

Cale Vansickle has 516 yards passing and 361 yards rushing and Brady Hanson 398 yards and five scores on the ground for Southeast Valley. Hanson also had 24.5 tackles and one interception on defense.

Roland-Story should be able to impose its will on both sides of the ball in this one. Roland-Story 40, Southeast Valley 7

Collins-Maxwell at Glidden-Ralston

Collins-Maxwell (3-1), Glidden-Ralston (2-2): Collins-Maxwell has a lot of momentum after back-to-back wins over Coon Rapids-Bayard (28-20) and Colo-NESCO (28-18).

With back-to-back games of holding their foes to 20 points or less, the Spartan defense is playing at a high level. Austin Boege has 34 tackles and one sack and Josef Dvorak 29 tackles and one sack to lead Collins-Maxwell.

On offense, Dvorak has 502 yards and eight touchdowns rushing on 9.7 yards per carry. Cooper Wierson has 251 yards and four touchdowns rushing and 226 yards and two scores passing.

Colby Wallace leads Glidden-Ralston with 718 yards and 12 touchdowns rushing plus 175 yards passing. Alex Daniel has 27.5 tackles, one sack and one fumble recovery for the Wildcats on defense.

This game should come down to the wire. End the end, Collins-Maxwell’s defense will do just enough for the Spartans to prevail. Collins-Maxwell 32, Glidden-Ralston 26

Colo-NESCO at Baxter

Colo-NESCO (2-3), Baxter (2-2): Colo-NESCO is in need of a spark after suffering its third straight loss last week against Collins-Maxwell.

The Royals need to find a rhythm on offense after being held under 20 points twice in the last three weeks. They have played solid defense, and if they can take another step on that side their skid could come to an end this week against Baxter.

More: How Jack Angell has built up confidence as quarterback of the Colo-NESCO football team

Breckin Clatt has 470 yards and eight touchdowns rushing and quarterback Jack Angell 311 yards and four touchdowns on the ground to go along with 249 yards and six scores through the air for the Royals. Landon Gjerde (30 tackles), Clatt (29), Mark Bower (28) and Colton Niemeyer (27.5) lead Colo-NESCO on defense.

Baxter quarterback Eli Dee has 619 yards and seven touchdowns through the air and Perrin Sulzle is his top target with 24 catches for 247 yards and five touchdowns. Dee is the top Bolt defensive player with five interceptions.

This will be another hard-fought 8-player battle on Friday in Baxter. Look for the Royals to get just enough of a lift on offense to snap their losing streak. Colo-NESCO 32, Baxter 29
