In the 1993 episode of “Seinfeld” titled “The Masseuse,” Elaine is dating a man who happens to share a name with a serial killer.
She’s trying to convince him to change his name from Joel Rifkin.
Here’s some dialogue from that episode:
Elaine: “There are a lot of players named Deion these days. What a cool name, Deion. If I were gonna change my name, I’d go with Deion.”
In 1993, Deion Sanders was one of the biggest names in professional sports, as evidenced by the “Seinfeld” shoutout. He played for both the Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Falcons in 1993.
The “Seinfeld” reference paid homage to a unique and entertaining persona.
The name Deion Sanders has been among the national conscious since 1985, when he stepped onto the Florida State campus as a freshman.
Brash, bold and never shying away from the cameras, the country watched as “Neon Deion” became one of college football’s brightest stars.
He also was an accomplished baseball player, and when the time came for him to become a professional athlete, he followed both paths.
In the NFL, he played for the Falcons, 49ers, Cowboys, Redskins (now Commanders) and Ravens during a 14-year career.
He was the 1994 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, was a member of 8 Pro Bowl teams, and won two Super Bowls, one with Dallas and one with San Francisco.
In Major League Baseball, he played for the Yankees, Braves, Reds and Giants in 11 seasons. He may have not won a World Series title, but he is still the only athlete to have played in both the Super Bowl and World Series.
When his playing days were over, he got into coaching football — particularly high school football.
In 2020, “Neon Deion” became “Coach Prime” as he moved to the college ranks, becoming head coach at Jackson State University.
He spent three years there before moving to Colorado in 2023. He immediately made the program relevant after it hadn’t done much since winning a national title in 1990, right around the time “Seinfeld” was just taking off on TV.
However, how good Colorado is, is up for debate. Coach Prime certainly brings a lot of attention, but the football product isn’t always the best to watch.
We’ll learn a lot about Colorado this Saturday when the Buffaloes play UCF in Deion’s birth state of Florida.
UCF is coming off a bye week following a dramatic 35-34 win over TCU to open Big 12 play Sept. 14.
Colorado is coming off an amazing overtime win against Baylor where the tied the game at the end of regulation on a Hail Mary, then won with a huge defensive stop in overtime down by the goal line.
UCF comes into this game favored by 12.5.
On the latest episode of “The *State* of Florida Sports Podcast,” Colorado beat writer Scott Procter of the Fort Collins Coloradoan, and UCF reporter Chris Boyle of the Daytona Beach News-Journal, help break down every facet of this game.
Scott will explain what Colorado does well outside of its two superstar players, Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter.
He’ll give us an idea of what it’s like covering the lightning rod “Coach Prime.”
And he’ll talk about how Colorado will be able to handle the hot and humid weather of late-September Florida.
Meanwhile, Chris will tell us what’s made UCF so successful early in the 2024 season
He’ll explain how transfer quarterback KJ Jefferson has been able to assimilate into this offense so quickly.
And he’ll juxtapose UCF’s more stoic head coach Gus Malzahn, an anti-Coach Prime of sorts.
