Vice President Kamala Harris announces campaign visit to Arizona

Vice President Kamala Harris is coming back to Arizona.

Harris will campaign in the battleground state on Sept. 27, according to a campaign official.

The trip will mark Harris’ second Arizona campaign swing since she became the Democratic nominee at the beginning of August. Harris also visited several times before taking over the top of the ticket from President Joe Biden.

The campaign did not say which city Harris would visit during her time in the state.

Harris plans to campaign across the country next week, visiting Pennsylvania Wednesday, Arizona Friday and Nevada Sunday. It’s a move her campaign says reflects the different paths she could use to land 270 Electoral College votes and win the race for the White House.

Both campaigns see Arizona as an important state on the electoral map. The state’s 11 electoral votes are up for grabs, and polls show a razor-thin race between Harris and former President Donald Trump. Biden beat Trump here by fewer than 11,000 votes in 2020, which was the smallest margin of any state in the country that year.

Harris has sent top campaign surrogates to Arizona this summer. Plus, she came to the state for her own rally in Glendale in August. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and his wife, Gwen Walz, have each taken solo trips to the state. Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff has hit the trail for Harris here, too.

“We are the underdogs in this race,” Walz said during a campaign stop in Mesa earlier in September.

Since Harris launched her campaign in August, volunteers and organizers have made more than 13.5 million phone calls and knocked on 600,000 doors across Pennsylvania, Arizona and Nevada, according to a campaign official.

On the Republican side, Trump has been to Arizona several times in recent months. He came to Phoenix in June, held a rally in Glendale at the same venue as Harris in August and toured the southern border in Cochise County. This month, he held a rally in Tucson. Trump has also sent Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance to campaign in Arizona twice.
