Ohio State keeps No. 3 spot in AP poll after stampeding Marshall

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The Buckeyes offense produced fireworks on Saturday in a 49-14 win over Marshall where they gained over 550 yards of offense. Despite the win, they did not make gains in the rankings.

Ohio State (3-0) is still the No. 3 team in the nation in both the Associated Press and USA Today coaches polls heading into Week 5, marking the second straight week they sit in that spot. The team is still surrounded by Southeastern Conference teams with Texas keeping the No. 1 AP spot after a 51-3 win over UL Monroe and Georgia staying at No. 2 during a bye week.

Three takeaways from Ohio State’s 49-14 win over Marshall

With four all-ranked matches for Week 4 coupled with some upsets, the rankings had noticeable changes from top to bottom. Michigan moved up to No. 12 after its last-second home win over USC, who dropped to No. 13. Illinois’ upset over Nebraska put the Illini at No. 19 while Mountain West side Boise State joined the AP poll at No. 25 after a 56-14 win over Portland State.

Utah moved up to the No. 10 spot after beating Oklahoma State, who dropped to No. 20 and Tennessee moved up to No. 5 after its win over the Oklahoma Sooners.

Ohio State is set to start Big Ten play Saturday and go on the road for the first time this season. They face Michigan State at 7 p.m. in East Lansing to begin conference play. Saturday’s game will be broadcast exclusively on Peacock, a streaming service owned by NBC and not NBC4’s parent company Nexstar.

Week 5 gives us one of the biggest regular season games in college football history as No. 2 Georgia takes on No. 4 Alabama at 7:30 p.m., marking the first time since 2020 the schools have played a regular season game. Since that 2020 meeting, the two have met in a pair of SEC title games and in the 2022 national championship game.

NBC4’s coverage of the college football season continues with an all-ranked edition of Big Ten Saturday Night from Happy Valley. No. 9 Penn State will host No. 19 Illinois at 7:30 p.m. from Pennsylvania. The last time the two met at Beaver Stadium in 2021, the Illini beat the Nittany Lions 20-18 after nine overtimes.
