Rams stun 49ers with miraculous comeback: Instant analysis of win

For the third straight game, the Rams fell behind their opponent by a wide margin. But unlike their first two games of the season, the Rams overcame their 14-point deficit against the 49ers and managed to pull out the win.

It was a nailbiting finish in Inglewood, with Matthew Stafford leading a miraculous comeback in the fourth quarter by leading three scoring drives to erase a 10-point lead by the 49ers with under 10 minutes to play. For a team that was 0-2 and desperate for a win, the Rams couldn’t have asked for a better time to take down their division rivals, who had won 9 of the last 10 meetings during the regular season.

Everything went the Rams’ way down the stretch, from Jake Moody missing a 55-yard field goal to Tutu Atwell’s 50-yard catch late in the fourth quarter to a pass interference penalty on the 49ers with 42 seconds left. They capitalized in crunch time and finally got their first win of the season.

Final score: Rams 27, 49ers 24

The 49ers marched down the field quickly on their opening drive, helped by a roughing the passer and facemask penalty on the second play of the game. There was a busted coverage on Jauan Jennings’ 13-yard touchdown catch, leaving him wide open in the end zone for an easy score.
The Rams ran 11 personnel on every play in their first two games of the season but they opened in 12 personnel with Colby Parkinson and Hunter Long at TE and Tutu Atwell and Demarcus Robinson at WR. They went three-and-out after Stafford was pressured on third down.
Stafford only attempted one pass in the first quarter, which was an incompletion. He had zero passing yards in the first 21 minutes of the game and the Rams had just 40 total yards, all rushing by Williams. His first completion was a 24-yarder to Tutu Atwell with 8:26 left in the second quarter.
For the third straight week, it was Ronnie Rivers backing up Williams, getting his first carry of the game midway through the second quarter.
The Rams pulled off a fake punt in the second quarter to keep a drive alive, giving a direct snap to Ronnie Rivers, who ran 7 yards on fourth-and-6. Later on in the possession, Stafford hit Williams for a 15-yard touchdown where the running back flipped over a defender into the end zone to make it 14-7, 49ers.
Kam Kinchens is starting in place of John Johnson III and he had a costly mistake, allowing a 31-yard touchdown catch to Jennings after getting beat badly on a double-move.
The Rams stayed alive in the third quarter with a second touchdown run by Williams, which was set up by a 48-yard pass interference penalty drawn by Tutu Atwell deep down the field earlier in the drive.
Jennings was a thorn in the Rams’ side all game, going off for XXX catches, XXX yards and three touchdowns. It was a career day for the 49ers receiver, stepping up in the absence of Deebo Samuel and George Kittle.
Jake Moody missed a 55-yard fieldg oal with 2:48 left that would’ve put the 49ers up by 10 points and the Rams immediately turned around and completed a 50-yard bomb to Atwell to get the ball isnide the 5-yard line. Williams cashed in with his third touchdown to tie the game at 24 with 1:51 to play.
The 49ers got the ball back but punted it away after Braden Fiske and Kobie Turner stopped a scrambling Purdy on third down to get the defense off the field. Xavier Smith returned the punt 37 yards to midfield with 42 seconds left and the Rams only needing a field goal to win.
After a pass inteference penalty on Campbell, Joshua Karty drilled a 37-yard field goal with 2 seconds left to give the Rams their first lead of the day.

It was over when…

… Karty made the 37-yard field goal to give the Rams a 27-24 lead with only 2 seconds left.
